  • 2024 West Florida

I attended the fall game tonight on a cool clear night after heavy afternoons rains that likely caused the sparse crowd. The Argos had QB down by simple touch and did not run full team returns, punts or FG.

The two deep punters and PK kicked competently and the defense dominated the offense, although the offense did better than they did at the spring game.

The offense had to play small ball in the passing game since the QB had no time to pass deep. The DL was quick, fast enough to run down the QB and swatted down multiple passes. The LB and DB picked multiple balls and the DB were all over the receivers with tight coverage.

The offense was able to run the ball and complete mostly short to medium passes with one deep completion. QB Bartolo and Stokes got most of the reps with Rich and a local HS player getting a couple of chances. Bartolo had two sustained drives from the 50 into the end zone with short TD passes. Stokes had long sustained drives into the red zone three times, but turned it over on downs twice and a pick once.

Stokes spreads the ball around more with his passes and uses the TE more than Bartolo, who likes throwing to the WR first and then the RB. Some of the RB were misnumbered, but I think Woods and Lane got most of the reps and the longest plays for the offense besides the one deep ball thrown by Stokes to a WR.

Overall, very impressed by the defense and the speed and quickness of the DL. There was no drop off in the stinginess of the D when the 2nd and 3rd string were in the game. The QB and RB looked better than the spring game and the offense was able to have more sustained drives mixing up the run and pass. I believe they could have done much better if the QB were not down by touch.

Bartolo and Stokes both looked more comfortable running the offense and based on tonight’s performance Bartolo is slightly ahead for QB1.
