If a player transfers for more $$$, a school should be reimbursed for the time (set at an hourly rate) and investment of recruitment, total cost of recruiting visit by the player prior to them being able to play for a new school. Let the school bringing in the transfer pay for at least 50% of the transfer cost.

So you are saying make it similar to European soccer if a big club comes in and takes a smaller club best player the smaller club gets compensated for the loss of that player. This would solve so much.

The premise of relegation and promotion in American athletics would be an amazing undertaking. if you win the FCS championship you get moved up to FBS. and the worst teams in FBS get moved down to FCS level it would add a whole new level to everything.

Thanks for the input everyone, that leads me to think that unless a kid is going into a D1 program that the desire to transfer to another D2 school must be primarily driven by unhappiness in their situation with the current program that they are in or some other motiviating factor besides money though I am sure every bit that they can get helps in some situations.

I heard LMU has a 100,000.00 budget for nil basketball team. Football coach sounds accurate on his assumption of 5 to 15 thousand a year per player that qualifies.

Speaking of transfers, the Hula Bowl today had some SAC flavor to it. Former Newberry RB Mario Anderson Jr. (Now on his 3rd school at Memphis) took home Offensive MVP, while Carson-Newman DB Major Williams (a UVA transfer) was Defensive MVP

Do any of you have any insight on how much the best players may receive in NIL deals for D2 programs? It seems the portal wouldn't be nearly as lucratve unless you had a chance to get a piece of a big D1 pie. Maybe I'm wrong, just wondering if anyone has any idea if the D2 guys get much of anything in terms of NIL?

I would say, AT MOST, D2 players receive 10-15K a year from NIL and that would be a RARE amount.

I can see a future where incoming recruits are required to sign 'contracts' that stipulate that they must stay at their school of 'choice' for a minimum of two years with the exception for coaching changes and hefty buyouts from the 'poaching' football program...

Again, can't say that I disagree, but if I'm at Miss State making 65K to play WR and LSU calls me and offers me 500K... I can't say that loyalty would play a huge factor for me.

Like I said, it makes sense when there's guaranteed worthwhile $$$ involved in a transfer move.

And it's not just the players. Coaches have been bolting for years doing the same thing players are doing now.

I can understand a player and their family deciding on making a change in an effort of saving college cost and steering away from long term debt due to some restrictions of D2 schools limitations with full scholarship opportunities.

I also understand when a player sees an opportunity to move up a division, again to take advantage of scholarship opportunities or guaranteed worthwhile $$$ through NIL support. However, in many cases with NIL some can say, basically selling out to the highest master $$$ bidder is in select cases is kind of like selling your soul, but it's your choice, and you live with it.

Again, to walk away from loyalty, honor, and trust and transfer in a lateral move without honest gains, just to basically say that you transferred is borderline dishonest. You are truly letting the coaches and fans know that the trust and faith they put in you was all a waste.

I can't fault the players for chasing money. Many have to make money while they can. The vast majority will not make it to the NFL. Why would I want to play for 5K when I can play for 20K? Why would you want a job that you make 60K at when you can do the same job for another company for 100K? It makes no sense to stay. I also can't fault the players for trying to stay in college for as long as possible. Many are making more money than they will at a full time job. Why would they leave?!

What I do blame is the NCAA. They open the portal (which is equivalent to NFL Free Agency) while the season is still underway. This creates opt outs and teams entering bowl games with half their starters not playing. They need to move the portal window to after the season and shorten portal windows.

They need to also put rules in place on players being contacted by 3rd parties (agents) while under NLI with another school. I also fault the NCAA for creating the collective. It only enhances the problems of NIL and creates even more issues with player tampering.
