  • Washburn @ UNK

Homecoming for the Lopers. Two teams that desperately need a win.

I'll update when I can but have some family stuff a little later so updates may be sporadic.

Scoreless after a quarter. Washburn has driven into UNK territory on both drives but has turned it over on downs both times. The Lopers got one long run from Davis but has done nothing else offensively so far.

5 yard run by Davis opens the scoring. 6-0 Lopers after the missed PAT. UNK was going to kick a short field goal but got a first down on a Washburn penalty. Neither team is sharp, showing why both are 1-3 on the season.

Looking at the team stats I’m wondering how in the heck we won.

It got a little dicey at the end! They sure needed it. Still a lot of good and a lot of bad out there for the Lopers. It has been a. Weird year

A blocked punt setting them up at the Washburn 10 was huge along with the sack/forced fumble/return touchdown. There's 14 points that the offense didn't have to earn.

That's the key for UNK so far this year. Have special teams and defense make things easier for the offense. The defense isn't outstanding but has certainly been more reliable than the offense. Like turning the Bods away on 4th down three times in the first half for example.

The end of the game was pretty much a train wreck though. You have one of the key leaders on defense get an unnecessary targeting call on an incomplete 4th down pass to give Washburn life. They end up scoring. Luckily UNK recovered the onside kick but then is unable to put the game away, turning it over on downs because the offense seems incapable of picking up 3rd or 4th and short. Then you have shades of Pitt State last year and allow a long touchdown pass when you're in a prevent defense. It was an amazing catch but shouldn't have been allowed to happen. Then UNK bobbles the ensuing onside kick but thankfully comes up with it to put the game away.

This was two not very good teams matching up that both made quite a few mistakes in the game. UNK won because they managed to suck a little less.

They weren't in prevent against Pitt last year. They went press-man for some completely inexplicable reason.

I must have blocked the exact circumstances from my mind (because why would you not be in a prevent defense???) But in any case, pretty inexcusable to get burned deep in a late game situation when you know exactly what the offense is going to do.
