How do Texas schools decide which system to try to align with? UT, A&M or Tech? In Minnesota it is the U system- Twin Cities, Duluth, Crookston and Morris. The rest of them are in the Minnesota State system and pretty much started out as teacher colleges.

Tech will let them keep their name (at least for now), They'll do anything to get more schools into their system.

I think just Tech and Angelo comprise the entire Tech system .

Schools don’t always join a system. Some are started by the main University. Example UH Clear Lake was started by UH. Now, for the schools that have joined it mainly comes down to which major University best aligns with their own. A rural university such as Texas A&I would offer more courses in the way of agriculture and engineering than an urban university which might focus more on liberal arts thus A&I would align with A&M and therefore join the A&M system.

All of this being said, most smaller universities that did join major systems did so out of self preservation. The trickle down policy of funding state universities during hard economic times leaves schools such as Midwestern in a vulnerable spot.

In the case of Angelo State being part of Tech was more of Angelo State getting away from Texas State/Sam Houston/Lamar system. ASU, as it was explained on this board by an ASU poster, Texcap maybe not sure, was left a considerable amount of $$$ from an Alum and was afraid that Tx State would try to use the $$$ for the system as a whole.

Sul Ross is also considering leaving the Tx St system for Tech.

One last important criteria that schools look at is the PUF which only UT and A&M currently have access to.

The old adage that there is safety in numbers and more clout for education dollars has definitely improved Texas A&I, East Texas State, and West Texas State as they were formerly known by. Hope that gives you some insight.

Interesting stuff! Had no idea that they had that many systems- or that many public schools.
