  • WAC-ASUN merger; Attempt to Move to FBS

This was posted in the D2 General Discussion Forum:

"The remaining football members of the Atlantic Sun and WAC have agreed to align to form the foundation of a 10-member football-only conference, sources told ESPN, with the intention of becoming the 11th FBS conference.

Sources said the founding documents for the league state the group intends to move "from what is currently known as FCS football to what is currently known as FBS football at the earliest practicable date."

The schools that have signed on to join the league are WAC football members Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christian, Utah Tech, Southern Utah and Tarleton State and Atlantic Sun football members Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, Central Arkansas and North Alabama.

UT Rio Grande Valley football starts in 2025."

According to the ESPN article this was lifted from this is far, far from a done deal that they get to move to FBS from FCS:

    GOOD LUCK!

With the absurd red tape involved with D1 FBS, not to mention the prohibition of new conferences entering, I just don't see this happening for some time, if ever!

But, it's a GREAT marketing and recruiting tool. Plus, it should draw ignorant alums to dump money into their alma maters.

Soon enough, the big boys in FBS will be moving on to their own sanctioned, non-NCAA league. They will share in all contracts, sales revenues, etc based on where they finish each year. The top players in the world will only attend those universities and will be paid to do so, on top of full scholarships.

All the left over, "sloppy seconds" NCAA D1's (FCS & FBS) will then become even more insignificant, likened to NAIA of the D1s.

D2 & D3 programs will be less effected and the new "Power League" might have a power "D2" division as well. At least that's the current talks at this time.

Back to the "Wac Asun Wac Asoff" plans, I hope it all works out and they can get by the D1 Board of Directors and get the prohibition lifted and get a brand new, unproven, FCS "football only" conference approved for FBS.

And I though the Marines had a lot of hills to climb!

Good luck with that-the NCAA has been blocking this kind of thing for a while now.
