  • The Lady Buffs went 4-2 in the latest tournament, losing to West Florida and McKendree. They are a young team and it shows at times. 10-2 is a good start though.

Sorry this update was late, I know you guys are dying to hear about softball since there aren't any important games on today. Don't worry though, Jerry says the Cowboys WILL be in the Super Bowl next year! It's nice of him to buy the team tickets.

Yeah. They probably shouldn't have lost that first game to WF in the bottom of the 7th, having gone into the last inning with a 2-0 lead. I followed along each game on the stats. I got the feeling that Mook was trying a lot of different line-ups, giving a lot of girls playing time. I guess that's what the pre-conference schedule is for. Freshman Janning looks to be the #1 on the mound followed by Black Hills transfer Lesky. If you look at the stats, WT leads the LSC in hitting and fielding, and is 3rd in pitching. The defense seems improved, only 3 errors in the first 12 games.

I had noticed the fielding has improved too. There's nothing more than I hate than unearned runs. I agree about the top 2 pitchers, I am curious to see how the rest of the staff will perform. One is a lefty but has had little work. The transfer from Angelo has had mixed results, but her last outing was very good.

Meanwhile Emilee Boyer is off to a slow start at Ole Miss. https://olemisssports.com/sports/sof...lee-boyer/6133

Jumping from the LSC to the SEC is going to be a learning curve (no pun intended).

Her last start she only gave up 4 hits and the 3 runs were all unearned.

Parlay that NIL money into a great experience and education.

I wasn't bashing her, I would have done the same thing she did. Hopefully her hitting will improve.

              Oh I know you werent.

Ive seen other posts around facebook that they are expecting her to be the Trinidad Chambliss of softball and that isnt going to be realistic.

              • The Lady Buffs won 2 games against ENMU by a combined score of 19-3; both games were run ruled.

That's it for this week. Next week they face OCU and Cameron at home. Neither will be easy opponents. Cameron always plays hard against WT, no matter what their record.

Hopefully Flosports will work better from Canyon than it did yesterday. Only part of the first game was available.

Yeah. Eastern's feed (or lack thereof) sucked. They need to get their sh!t together.

                    • The Lady Buffs split with OCU and swept Cameron this last weekend. That sounds pretty good, but I am very concerned about our pitching staff. Their current conference ERAs are: Peskey 4.27, Janning 4.94, Sucher 7.0, and Sharp 7.0. There is another pitcher on the team, Guzman, but she has only pitched 2.1 innings for the season, and those games were nonconference.

WT managed to run rule OCU in the first game, but they were hitting us hard too. We had to bring in Peskey, in relief of our starter, Janning, who had given up 6 earned runs in 3.1 innings. We won the game 15-7, but 4 of our runs were unearned. In the second game, OCU figured out Peskey. Coach Mook elected to leave her in for the full game, and she gave up 11 earned runs. WT lost the game 11-5.

Cameron is having a rough year, but they always do their best against WT. However the Lady Buffs were hitting and both starting pitchers did good work. Coach Mook gave the other second tier pitchers some work, and Cameron hit them hard. In the second game Mook took out a lot of starters and they made a lot of bad plays. so he had to put all the starters back in, including Peskey. So WT won both games 10-4 and 8-4. I think the 2 backup pitchers looked good at times, but one of them threw a LOT of balls that were 5-6 feet over the plate.

The Lady Buffs are off until Sunday when they play UT Dallas.

Somehow the weekend's performance moved them up a few spots in the rankings to 3rd. Angelo also moved up a spot to 8th. OCU is 13th, but they should go up significantly if they keep playing the way they did last week.

                      • The Lady Buffs swept the Dallas Comets last weekend as well as WNMU last night. Coach Mook continues to give the reserve pitchers playing time, but I don't think they are yet ready for prime time.

In the first game, WT led 10-0 in the 4th inning. Sucher and Sharp both pitched, with Sucher giving up an earned run in 1 inning and Sharp giving up 4, also in just 1 inning. Starter Janning returned to finish off the game, 12-5.

In the second game, our ace Peskey gave up 7 earned runs in 4 innings. Sucher did a good job in relief, giving up NO runs in 1 inning.

Mook cleared most of the bench, including putting Sharp in at short stop. She made an ugly error, but made up for it with a 3 run homer. WT managed to hang on, 29-7, in 5 innings.

I thought the WNMU production started out badly. They have several cameras, but the "director" would not switch when needed. For example, the view was of the pitcher, but didn't change when the ball went over the fence, but you got to see the pitcher's reaction to it.

However around the middle of the first game, there was either a new director, or someone spoke to the existing one. The production then became exceptionally good, maybe the best D2 softball games I have seen. You got looks into the dugouts, closeups with the coaches huddling with their teams, and switches to the fence just before the ball went over.

WT has 2 cameras, one on the fence facing the pitcher, which is much appreciated because all we used to have was a web cam the announcer would slide around. The problem with the fence camera is it jiggles when windy, and it's always windy in Canyon, especially during the day. I hope we can improve our production to match WNMU's.

                        • On January 31, Fort Lewis beat Cal State San Marcos 3-2.

That game remains the only loss for Cal State San Marcos and the only win for Fort Lewis.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid Lady Buff pitching is a bit sketchy this year. Mook had to hustle in late spring early summer to find pitching to replace our national POY that transferred to Miss State.. Against top competition, ie, regional/super regionals. we may not cut the mustard this year. Mook will win 50 or so but not make the Elite 8.

Did you watch yesterday's games? Sul Ross honestly needs to move back to D3 or NAIA. They have won 2 games this year but none against LSC teams. Their streaming production yesterday was terrible, with players looking like The Flash as they left a trail behind themselves when moving. The feed went off and came back better though. The commentator was pretty good.

Peskey may be one who plays to the level of the competition. She pitched 3 innings yesterday, giving up 2 earned runs. Sharp entered the game and promptly loaded the bases but managed to get them out without a score. Guzman came on, her first appearance in conference play, and did a nice job of pitching. She struck out a batter looking, and got the other 2 batters out with no hits or walks. Her ERA remains 0.0 for the season in very limited work. She and Sharp have never pitched more than 1 inning in a game at WT.

The most bizarre appearance I've ever seen in softball came from SR reliever Castilleja. Her fist pitch looked like a lightning bolt with great movement, but was called a ball. She ended up giving up 5 earned runs with no hits in her 0.0 innings pitched! She gave up 3 walks, a wild pitch, and hit 2 batters. The SR coach mercifully pulled her out.

I am hopeful Coach Mook can improve the pitching staff over the next month. In his 2001 Natty win, he alternated Lair and Wilson most games, and it worked beautifully. Maybe he can get the pitchers in a rhythm like he did that year.
