As a typical fan I'm nitpicking the offense as an armchair quarterback the day after. It doesn't mean I want anybody fired because I don't. I like the coaching staff, but I'm wondering about a few things Western Oregon could have done to win the game yesterday. I've already commented on puzzling up the middle calls on the 1-yard line seven times and not getting in.
My other problem is our quarterback carrying it 22 times, one more than our star running back. I get it that McCarty is extremely athletic and fast and he did have over a hundred yards rushing, but I really would like to see him throw the ball a little bit.
Kingsville basically won the game at the end with their third string quarterback throwing the ball and getting two pass interference plays. Bottom line, it's tough to play defensive back at any college level and you often will get pass interference plays. I wish Western Oregon would give their fine receiving corps more of a chance to catch balls. There was a time in the second half where they called three straight runs for McCarty and he never got a first down.
I love ground and pound, but I don't understand this game plan. Yes, the quarterback is very athletic, he also got sacked a few times. Let's give our receivers a chance at the ball.
