Yeah when Tascosa was 6A, they were in the Midland/Odessa/Abilene district. Thank god they moved back down to 5A and Frenship is about to do the same when they open up their new high school next year.

This Panhandle University 806 crap is putting WT into a corner. It’s been destructive to WTs enrollment, athletics and influence.

This is going to sound harsh but when you are signing a QB from Canyon High school that only had a 5-5 record and only 10 TD passes in 9 games played last year, someone tell me what I am missing here unless WT is going to adopt the poor mans Harding's or even ENMU's offense?
But he's the son of Dalton Bell! Maybe we can sign Kriry's kid too.

I don't know that I would go that far. Cheesy, yes. Destructive, no.

I doubt the Canyon kid got more than a bologna sandwich. My bet is he was signed as tip-of-the-hat to his father Dalton Bell. Remember him? Carthel's' first QB that got it all rolling back then. He'll never see the field in a game. Not at QB.

What is that exactly? From your description it sounds like a Wendler scheme. They talked about giving away 806 tee shirts last night, but without saying what 806 is. I know it's the area code but that's it.

It’s more of the WT administration fencing in WT as just a Regional University that is for a limited number of panhandle counties. It a branding campaign to highlight the 806 area code alone.

It’s particularly frustrating me because I am from Midland/Odessa and I view WT as a state university for this area. When my daughter graduated high school WT offered $2k in scholarships and Tech offered $3k. WT responded that they could offer more if we lived in one of 26 panhandle counties. My wife and I both graduated from WT in the 90s. This panhandle university crap is harming enrollment. My daughter is a student at Tech.

I understand your frustration! I would be surprised if any WT alum is not frustrated.

Wendler is disliked by alums and the faculty gave him a vote of no confidence yet he’s still there.

"806" as opposed to say......"WT...As Big as Texas." My idea of a slogan.

I wont "out" my reliable sources in this part of the world but two kids in the Brazos Valley area were interested in WT. One was given the "You are a freshman speech, WT may not be for you yet" speech and they ended up signing at Clarendon College. The other one wasn't given the "panhandle discount treatment" and ended up signing with UT Tyler.

That source is an important middle man person for high school and college recruiters down here and was held at a high school sporting event Friday night.

                      Note: This wasnt for football.

Its depressing to hear the negative about WT on the other side of the state.

A freshman marketing major could come up with better than the "806." Hell, my 7 year old grandson could.

The "806" for WT is like displaying a girl with little tits on a strip club road sign. Limiting and unimaginative.

That is depressing. Clarendon College doesn't seem like a place anyone would go unless they lived very close by. Even one of my friends from Clarendon went to AC for the first 2 years then to WT the last 2. She was named the outstanding math student in her class. This happened before Wendler arrived.

There are 249 6A schools in Texas. If each school only graduates 10 varsity players each, that's a pool of 2,490 potential recruits.

I believe there are approximately 22 college football schools (FBS, FCS, DII) in Texas. If divided equally that's 113 new receuits per school.

"The point", there are TONS of top tier recuits available. The issue is more about under-performing in recruiting or simply not recruiting.

One of my son's was "stolen" from D1's by a very good DII recruiter. He had already given a verbal. Even his HS coaching staff were turning away other recruiters when they called, advising them he had already committed. Yet this ONE DII recruiter did not let that stop him. And my son came home one day and said he changed his mind. The rest is history.

The talent is there. You just have to go after them with the heart and tenacity of a champion.

Agree but there are only a handful of 6A schools west of I-35. You have El Paso (yeah we aren't counting that), Frenship (which will be dropping to 5A next year), Midland/Odessa, and San Angelo Central. That makes life tough on WT if they are just going to be this regional university and you really gotta score with players from smaller classifications.

I only counted 7-10 kids from the 6A schools.
