Yeah the schools are helping them load up with student loans. It's really somewhat of a sham. I am aware of a "player" at Hardin-Simmons that was recruited out of high school. Big signing day celebration etc. Three years in, he was still on the "JV" and the family figured out they'd been had. Meanwhile, "Johnny" now had $73,000 in debt, even after his scholarships of various kinds.
The athletes are sucked in to the sales pitch that they are legit college athletes (most are not), and they will get a shiny new uniform, their own locker, and finally have their day in the sun, when everyone else overlooked them.
HSU is running this charade and it's keeping the doors open. They have something like 200 kids on the football squad, which represents about 20 percent of their undergrad enrollment. A lot of these kids frankly have zero business in college. Couldn't win a first-grade spelling bee. It's sad really. But I blame mom and dad as much as I blame the school, for being so stupid, themselves.
There should be some regulation on these schools though. The school should not exist simply because they are defrauding suppose-d athletes that are not fit academically.
On the flip side, the HSU varsity would easily hang with anyone in the LSC for the same reason. They've got a bunch of ballers who can't get in anywhere else. Most of these guys will exhaust their eligibility and have nothing to show for it, or a worthless piece of paper in exchange for their student debt.
To be honest many university offerings are a sham. Even large state U. So many bogus/worthless degree programs. It's big business.

Agree. Not all of them are that bad, but HSU and some like them are a racket.

This actually is what is causing a rift in D3, including the American Southwest Conference. The schools that are concerned about some level of academic integrity have left the conference. The Southern Athletic Association and Sothern Collegiate Athletic Conference don't want to be associated with Baller U. That has left the four remaining ASC schools - all baller schools - on an island. Enrollments at all four are way down, and they weren't big schools to begin with. Howard Payne is down to 833 full time students, with 20 percent on the football team. Hardin-Simmons is around 1300 full time, ETBU around 1650, and 3150 at UMHB.
UMHB has been exploring the Heartland Conference. Howard Payne needs to close. HSU probably needs to merge its remaining bona fide academic programs with ACU, like it did with their seminary.

1, 852,000 U.S. abortions in 2006. That's a lot of high school seniors lost for 2024.
2. Reportedly, 25% of teens are now identifying as LGBTQ+/-. Most of this demographic will obviously not be reproducing.
If we hit 35-40 percent of teens identifying as something other than heterosexual, our country is going to be facing some new and interesting logistical and societal challenges.
