Why do they have to pay the NCAA $300,000 a year for 10 years?

It’s their part of the House settlement. $3 million damages settlement per school, and they can pay it out over 10 years.

I just don't think D1's are going to drop to D2. The branding of D1 is vastly overrated, but admins really like it. It makes them think they're big time, when they're not. A couple of chump schools moved up this year, right? It's all to lose by 40 in the first round of the Big Dance, to collect that money and see people scream when they take a 2-0 lead 10 seconds into the game. Like clockwork, CBS cameras show the cheerleaders going nuts with that 2-0 lead. Heaven forbid they take a 20-18 lead, then upset alerts are all over the place, by then fans are like, "We've made it to the big time!" Final score, big time school 88, D1wannabe 49. But the admins got the check and stupid "upset alert" publicity that was never going to happen.

The bottom feeder D2's will stay on or go D3. I don't see a college president being able to tell Joe Booster they're going D2.

That sounds more like a punishment to the top D2 teams. Haha

One thing about D3 in the Northwest, they are very anti-scholarship division anything. All the state and private schools used to be in one big league: The Columbia Football Association. For other sports, they had separate leagues. I mentioned in another post how great this NAIA league was from my standpoint. Road games from WOU were mostly an hour or less away, with some exceptions to SOU, Oregon Tech, CWU -- but not as far as Texas. The small college football world was perfect for me.

Then the private schools -- even powerhouses Linfield and PLU -- took their ball and went home. They said they needed to play "like minded" schools, meaning only private schools and certainly not anyone who gives scholarship money. We all went different directions: OIT (once a power) cut football, SOU and EOU went NAIA, CWU and WOU went D2. The private school people were very happy about this and now compete in arguably the worst D3 football conference in America. (Note: Linfield went 8-1 two years ago and didn't get an NCAA berth because people know how bad the conference is.)

Us state school heathens are happy to be in D2. I miss the regional rivalries and not spending so much on travel when we should be putting $$$ into scholarships and facilities. I'm not sure how much longer Texas will keep us in their league and I wouldn't blame them if they dumped us.

Basically, West Coast football is a mess, even at the highest levels. (See UO, UW, LA schools in the Big 10; Stanford and Cal in the ACC.)

I think D2 is better off. Sure, every team has some guys who have developed and can play up a division, but for the most part they are D2 players, which is great. I think the D2 game can maintain in the new world of athletics.

I follow one FCS team, Idaho, from my hometown. The last couple years they have been decimated by the portal, losing upwards of 20 guys each year. Their coach took the New Mexico job and took guys with him. Eight miles across the border at WSU, their coach left South Dakota State, and took 25 of his players with him. Just brutal. I'm a WSU fan and do NOT approve of those actions.

That said, I think D2 is in a good spot and if some schools want to move up and play chase the $$$ game to get last in their FCS leagues, have at it.

I expect the portal/transfers will drop significantly after the 'House' decision as now all DI student athletes will be on scholarship and a large number of individuals that would consider transferring will no longer do so as they will be at risk of losing their scholarship if they don't get picked up. Sure there will still be a fair amount that are confident that they will get picked up but the portal numbers will drop precipitously. Examples like you have provided when a coach takes players he recruited with him to a new school will likely continue.
