No big deal. Schools can only pay out up to $20.2M a year to players. I'm sure all those FCS schools are ready to handle that. And surely EVERY (rich and profitable-aren't they all?) FBS school, too.

Schools are not required to share revenues. They are now allowed to do so. Compensation to athletes for low-D1 athletes is going to be minimal, as the budgets for these programs are primarily subsidized by the students.

I was shocked to learn about Texas Tech’s star pitcher, Canady, who got rocked for 5 runs in the first inning in last night’s loss to Texas. She had started her 3rd straight game, which was a bad idea. However she is getting a million a year from NIL!

To be fair I don’t like Tech but was impressed by them not giving up. Texas was ahead 10-0 in the top of the fifth. Tech could have just relaxed and gone home due to the run rule but instead scored 3 runs to keep the game alive. They lost anyway but they did their best.

Yep I have severe hatred for Tech at every turn and was hoping they would get embarrassed run ruled by Texas in that 3rd game. It would have been a different story if Tech pulled out Game 1 and could have rested Canady game 2 the same way Texas rested Kavan game 2. I was too impressed with Canady willing to pitch her arm off even after getting paid twice. Tech had no choice and the run rule would have happened had they started someone other than Canady. They need another pitcher and two hitters to be a legitimate team threat next year instead of trying to beat every good team out there 1-0, 2-1, etc. with Canady alone.

Yeah I don't see most FCS schools doling out big dollars for ballers. If a Nichols State really wanted to make a splash, they'd allocate $5 million toward a few basketball players and make some noise in the NCAA.

I think D2 is better off. Sure, every team has some guys who have developed and can play up a division, but for the most part they are D2 players, which is great. I think the D2 game can maintain in the new world of athletics.

I follow one FCS team, Idaho, from my hometown. The last couple years they have been decimated by the portal, losing upwards of 20 guys each year. Their coach took the New Mexico job and took guys with him. Eight miles across the border at WSU, their coach left South Dakota State, and took 25 of his players with him. Just brutal. I'm a WSU fan and do NOT approve of those actions.

That said, I think D2 is in a good spot and if some schools want to move up and play chase the $$$ game to get last in their FCS leagues, have at it.

FCS programs have a lot of financial hurdles facing them that they didn't 6 months ago. One is that they are on the hook for $300K a year to the NCAA for the next 10 years. Another is that their money games with P4 teams are in jeopardy. Those games will get played in 2025 and possibly 2026, but the P4s are all in on FBS only, and the lower FBS - those in the G5 - are also under tremendous pressure to keep their own schedules tough for the at large G5 bid to the CFP.

These two factors combined translate into as much as $2 million a year expense and/or lost revenue. Combine that with declining enrollments at most, and football-playing FCS schools are suddenly in the wilderness.

That's their share of the $2.8 billion settlement. They are paying that for the privilege of being able to call themselves D1 schools.
