Man, what a game. Have had some hours to reflect, and just so proud of this team. Have to give the defense a ton of credit. Keeping it 13-7 at the half was huge. But as I said in the other thread, though, I started losing hope. When you get down to a team like Duluth, it's intimidating. But Laqua has a resilient group and their fight was amazing.

That final drive was really impressive, every throw, catch and block to make it happen deserves credit. When they scored the TD with no time left, I think I just felt some magic like we were going to win, and yet I was still sitting on pins and needles waiting for the 2 point conversion. It took me a second to react, since the camera angle made it a bit hard to see if it was a catch. But once it was confirmed, I leapt out of my chair.

This win for sure has to be one of the biggest since the 1990s. The only other one I can think of that compares is beating St. Cloud State in the snow to get the Mineral Water Bowl berth. But this is probably larger considering it was against a ranked team, and the fact that it's Duluth. When I talk to people who don't know much about D2, I tell them in the NSIC, Duluth and Mankato feel like the Michigan and Ohio State of the conference.

Here's an idea of what this win means to me as an alumni. When I was attending MSU, times were tough in Moorhead. Every season was a losing one, and they never won more than two games. Their games Vs. Duluth were total disasters.
    2008: Dragons lost 52-10
    2010: Dragons lost 56-7
    2011: Dragons lost 49-21

But the one that stands out was in 2009. I didn't attend it, I didn't watch it, all I saw was the score while I was at a friends house for some drinks. The TV was on with Valley News Live, and they showed the score during sports, Duluth won 76-7. That told me the gap between the two programs and the hole the Dragons were in.

Thankfully, MSU hired Laqua, and he's done great work in turning the program into something competitive and respectable. As an alum, it's been great to watch, but also frustrating to not breakthrough with the upper level teams. Was especially true in the last two games Vs. UMD. 2021, lost 26-21. 2022, lost 36-28. To finally get over this hump, and do it against a ranked team, is phenomenal. There's still a lot of football to be played this season, but this is a moment to enjoy.

Here are some fun moments to enjoy:

Really impressed with the Dragons going into Duluth and walking out victors. MSUM has recruited well in MN, ND and WI. Laqua has a unique offense and gets the right personal to run it. Congratulations.

I think I just experienced the perfect weekend of football. On top of the Dragons' victory, the high school I attended won on Friday, the Minnesota Golden Gophers also won yesterday and the Minnesota Vikings won today. Even the Minnesota United FC won yesterday. Every type of football went well this weekend on my end.

Not sure if it was the distance, a let-down game after a big victory, or just McKendree's defense being really good, but what a disappointing result for the Dragons. I'm still happy for sure with the Duluth win, but this was a major missed opportunity. This season starts with Wayne, Duluth, Aug and Mankato all great teams, plus a trip to Winona which is never easy. Out of the first six, this was probably the most winnable.

I know being the favorite on paper doesn't lead to a win, but this was a game MSU had the talent to win, and it would have built on the Duluth result. It hurts to miss a chance like this. The game itself was frustrating, the Dragons only found their stride in one drive, otherwise they struggled to really get in a rhythm. Their lack of a running game really hurt them late when they couldn't get it in the endzone on a critical drive.

The good news is two of the next three games are at home, the bad news is they're against the top of the conference. Hopefully they can get one more upset and steal another one on the road. The offense has to get more consistent, though.

I watched the whole game and offensively they never found a rhythm and had really bad turnovers at real inopportune times. The talent is there to compete with the tops in the conference but they desperately need to get on their groove or they could go 0-3 in the next few games.

Said it before and I will say it again, I am a huge proponent of the air raid offense and believe at times the short passing game can be a great replacement for early down run game, but man would I have liked to see them hand it off once or twice when they are inside the Mckendree 5 yd line instead of 4 straight incompletions. Same situation last week in Duluth where we could have won the game in a less dramatic fashion instead of a turnover on downs by the goal line that forced them to pull of a heroic effort late in the game. Strand and the receivers are unbelievably talented, but when that field gets tight down in the red zone you have to find a way to get some production on the ground. That was a tough loss but will need to flush it fast and get ready for Augie this weekend. Would have loved a win, but at the end of the day it was at non-conference game and we have plenty of opportunities left to stay in the hunt for the NSIC. Talent is there to beat anyone in the conference so I will remain optimistic.

So, quite the roller coaster in the first four games. Honestly if you told me the Dragons would be 2-2 so far I'd probably be happy. It's no doubt unfortunate that they dropped the game to McKendree but that game was away after a long road trip and I think that team has improved. They are also 2-2, with one loss to an FCS team, and they hung in there.

Most importantly, they bounced back Saturday and played a game blow-for-blow with Augustana, ultimately getting the win. Another big road game is ahead in Winona, hopefully the Dragons can get a win and get the ball rolling. I'm excited overall for the rest of the season, there's a chance to clinch a winning season and then some.

On a side note, I LOVE the new uniforms. The black uniforms look great but I also really liked how they redid the regular uniforms. Good shade of red, I like the stripes on the shoulders and the script on the front is good. Solid job by Under Armor.

Woof. Dragons looked like they were in slow motion on both sides of the ball today. Should be a great game next weekend vs Mankato as both need to bounce back.

I've watched my fair share of college football, and this is maybe the most up and down team I've ever seen, especially considering the opponents. What a ride.
                    • Game 1, Vs. unranked opponent, loss
                    • Game 2, Vs. ranked opponent, win
                    • Game 3, Vs. unranked opponent, loss
                    • Game 4, Vs. ranked opponent, win
                    • Game 5, Vs. unranked opponent, loss
                    • Game 6, Vs. ranked opponent, ?

New story from the Fargo-Moorhead Forum: From QB to RB: The story of MSUM's leading rusher
MOORHEAD — The path to the playing field has been an interesting one for MInnesota State Moorhead running back Fynn Ridgeway. Despite being recruited as a quarterback, he was asked to change his position to help the Dragons succeed.

After a very successful high school career in which Ridgeway accounted for 8,164 yards of total offense and 86 touchdowns, the Whitefish, Montana, native decided to pursue college football at MSUM.

However, in the fourth game of his freshman season against Augustana, Ridgeway was asked to be the team’s emergency running back, a role he was more than happy to fill.

He caught my eye in their opener against Wayne. He made some plays and has a lot of wiggle and ball skills.

I knew the first six weeks of the season were going to be a gauntlet and that certainly turned out to be the case. Playing the four teams expected to be at the top of the NSIC, plus a tough road trip to Winona and a long one to McKendree was a tough road. It's hard to say how it feels coming out of it at 2-4.

On the one hand, I think it was entirely a possible result. But I expected the wins to be against McKendree and Winona State, as they were on paper the best chances. I think the fact that the wins were against UMD and Augustana makes it a bit disappointing, because it feels like we could have done more. I think all things considered, being able to get those victories means we should have at least gotten to 3-3.

At the end of the day, though, it is what it is. I'm glad they were able to put up a good fight against the Mavericks. And more importantly, there's still a lot of football left to be played. The margin for error, though, is smaller. Dragons need four wins to get over .500, and they have five games left. I'm really hoping they can pull it off with winnable games left on the schedule.

In the losing effort, Jack Strand set another record. He passed for his 66th touchdown, now the most all time for a Dragons QB. He also holds the passing yard record. In both cases he surpassed Demetrius Carr.

For those who didn't know, the voice of the Dragons on the airwaves is in a tough spot right now after suffering a recent heart attack. Here are details from the Fargo-Moorhead forum:

Driving home from the gym October 28, Jace Denman suffered a massive heart attack. He crashed into a car parked on the street just a couple of doors down from his home in West Fargo. Denman's wife, Sandy, heard the crash and ran outside to investigate. Neighbors were already assisting Denman and had called 911.

Denman, just 52 years old, was quickly transported to the intensive care unit at Sanford Hospital in Fargo. He was flown by helicopter the next day to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, which is equipped for some heart procedures not available at Sanford.

It'll be a long road back, but Jace is headed in the right direction. Still at the Minneapolis hospital, he had a balloon pump and breathing tube removed and began eating solid food Monday. Physical therapy is next.

His wife said paramedics had to revive him eight times. She also said his heart is working at 20 to 25% right now, so there's a long process ahead. So here's hoping for a full recovery. He has been a great addition to the Dragons family, calling games with a ton of enthusiasm and spirit.

I've linked some posts below of him calling big plays from this season:
