I think it’s odd it is even played before random sporting events.

Nice crowd in Moorhead last night. I thought it would be a close game but Wayne rolled. Once they had the big lead that front line just teed off on Strand. The best look last night was the blonde with the red scarf on the sideline taking pictures. Strand throws darts but was getting buried- lack of a running game and a defense that got worn out. Wayne with the KO return for a TD and a pick 6 is going to be a handful for anyone.

Not the start of the season the Dragons wanted by any means, but I will choose to stay optimistic. Wayne's D Line clearly was better than the Dragon O Line, but I don't think they were horribly outmatched. Same goes for any position group on the field. Wayne played a damn good game and the Dragons looked like they were off and couldn't find a rhythm from the start, not to mention a few back breaking penalties, KOR, and pick 6. Adam Kallenbach is arguably our best defensive back and sounds like he will be back in a few weeks, which will help. Regardless - they will need to flush this one down the toilet and move on fast as the schedule doesn't get any easier with a road trip to Duluth next up. Hopefully we can clean it up and look sharper next weekend. I have confidence that Jack Strand will find a way to move on from this performance. I know there are many disappointed Dragon fans today after the hype that has built up around this team this offseason, but there is a lot of football left to be played.

All the credit to Wayne St though. That's a great football team. I truly believe they will be the team to beat in the NSIC this year. Definitely will be the game of the week when they face Mankato.

Is it wrong of me to say that Epperson might be one of the biggest RB threats the Jacks face all year, besides Gordon at OSU? I don't know much about the MVFC RB landscape, but he seems to be quite coveted at Augie so it just got me to wondering. Jacks won't be facing SBL with Indiana State this year either.

It'll obviously be a non-factor either way, but I still plan to attend. I like inter-divisional matchups between DII and DI and I've yet to see one in football. I wonder how many Augie fans got tickets?

Yeah, the Dragons' issues seem to be the same as the past few years: offensive live and lack of dynamics in their offense. Strand gets precious seconds to throw the ball. Give Wayne's d-lineman credit, they seem to be very impressive. But protection is a concern Dragons fans have had for years. And the pass-heavy offense has worked for the Dragons, but games like last night show how much the lack of a running game makes game-planning against them easier. (I mean, there were moments last year where the Dragons would be in a let-the-clock-run situation and they'd STILL choose to pass the ball - that seems to be how uncomfortable with the run they are.)

I don't know that I would call it a lack of dynamics. MSUM runs a pretty complex passing game using a lot of different personnel groupings and motion. They basically found a way to manufacture a "run game" using underneath routes. I think Gage Florence is a great WR, but having over 100 receptions last season and just shy of 1000 yards is because he basically doubles as a receiving RB, catching a ton of passes on 1st down for 4-6 yards. Some of the route concepts they show are nearly impossible for the defense to properly cover without being okay with 1 on 1 matchups for the receivers running deeper routes. Stresses the hell out of a defense by having to choose to cover underneath and let Strand rip deep shots or give up the short game to have safety help. I have been. for the most part, a supporter of this style as it was deadly last season, but at the end of the day there are sometimes where you just need to run the damn ball. Perfect example of this was against Mankato last year. They had many opportunities to win that game but when they got into the redzone and that field got small they couldn't execute the pass game and ultimately couldn't convert successful drives to that point into TDs. Prime example of a situation where you have to be able to pick up some ground yards. I thought the run game looked okay the few times they handed off last night. Flynn Ridgeway looks like a good rb that can cut north/south hard in a zone scheme. I think they will need to lean on that more as the seasons goes on, if nothing else just to force defenses to respect it and not drop 8 in coverage.

I was super impressed with Wayne last night. That DL was solid. Physical.

Just an update, though the press release said no single game purchase, I was able to purchase the single game of Upper Iowa vs Concordia St Paul. Price was $13.55 after taxes.

St Thomas/UNI 7-7 in the second quarter. Might be a bigger win for the Coo than I first thought

Well this is going great. Minot scoops up a fumble and returns it. 6-0

Minot is having their own trouble retrieving kickoffs. Second botch this quarter.

This SMSU team is really inexperienced.
