Wayne State College Director of Athletics Mike Powicki announced today that the football rivalry between in-state rivals Wayne State and Nebraska-Kearney will resume in the 2025 season after the two schools agreed to a two-year home-and-home series.

The two schools have been rivals dating back to the first football meeting between the two schools in 1924 and met nearly every year until conference expansion forced the suspension of the yearly meeting following the 2011 season.

Wayne State and Nebraska-Kearney have faced each other 84 times on the gridiron. UNK won the most recent matchup between the two schools on September 1, 2011 in Wayne by a score of 41-20 before a statewide audience on Nebraska Public Television to snap a three-game WSC win streak in the series.

Wayne State will host Nebraska-Kearney in the 2025 season opener on August 28, 2025 at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne at 6 p.m. with the Lopers hosting the Wildcats in 2026 on August 27, 2026 at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field in Kearney at 7 p.m.

"We are excited to renew our rivalry with UNK," remarked Wayne State head football coach Logan Masters. "This game is important to both schools, alumni and the state of Nebraska. In-state rivalries are what makes college football special."

Obviously the conference would need to approve this, so that should mean a couple of more years for OOC games. This sounds like a good matchup historically and a good one within the state

There are many Nebraska kids on both squads and this is a big deal to them. Look for big attendance.

Assuming football uses the same rules as basketball, games against teams within your state are counted towards the in-region formula.
