  • UMD Game 6 Thoughts

10 thoughts after UMD's matchup with SMSU:

1 - Second play of the game and UMD gives up a 72 yard rushing TD. Watching that play the fits were lazy and poor angles by the safety. UMD came in and assumed the Mustangs would take the snap and fall over and they didn't need to come out and assert themselves. The 1's played much better after this series, however, having the 2's & 3's come out in the second half and give up three TD's is unacceptable.

2 - How many quarters will Walljasper play in the regular season? Here is where it stands currently (17 out of 24 possible quarters):
    • G1 vs Winona State - Pulled in the 3rd
    • G2 @ CSP - Didn't play at all in the second half
    • G3 vs Mankato - Played entire game
    • G4 @ USF - Played first series in the 3rd then pulled
    • G5 vs MSUM - Played the entire game
    • G6 vs SMSU - Didnt play at all in the second half
    • G7 @ NSU - Predict he will play the entire game
    • G8 vs Mary - Predict he will play 3 quarters
    • G9 @ Jamestown - Predict he will play the first half
    • G10 vs BSU - Predict he will play 3 quarters (senior day)
    • G11 @ Minot - Predict he will play 3 quarters
Stat line has him at 86-121 (71.1% completion) for 1197 yards, 11 TD, 3 INT with a QB Efficiency of 179.2 (1st NSIC / 5th in NCAA). More interesting is he isn't running the ball as much this year. Only 77 rushes (which includes 5 sacks) for 274 yards and 7 TD.

3 - Dehnicke continues to impress. 7 catches for 92 yards and 2 TD's. On the year he has 33 receptions for 534 yards and 4 TD. Real possibility of hitting 1000 yards receiving this year. Not bad for a guy that was listed as a DL on the 2024 roster.

4 - How nice is it to have Henson at K? After suffering what seemed like 15 years with Cox as our K we have someone that makes his XP and has the ability to make a FG from further than 25 yards out. Seems trivial but in close games how important is making your XP and being able to confidently line up for a FG rather than taking an unnecessary risk on 4th down (*cough* Coo). 15/15 on XP this year and the crucial 52 yarder a week ago against the Dragons. Huge piece to the puzzle this year.

5 - No Ames again? Not that his one game played against the Dragons was a big boost, however, coming into the season expectations were high (D2 elite 100 watch) and he has been a major bust. Hopefully none of the guys in the fantasy league took him as a high round pick. Jokes aside he will be needed should the Dogs make the playoffs because he is a guy they trust on the 50/50 balls.

6 - Still hate the gimmick plays. Flea Flicker against SMSU??? To me these are plays you use when you feel you can't move the ball with your regular offense. Yeah, it resulted in a long TD, yeah it may have been the best ball Walljasper has thrown this year(although his first TD pass to Ojile was nice too), but why? Also doing the William Perry short yardage run with your nose guard is fun but why take a TD from one of your RB's that have been grinding all season? Some times I think Vogler plays too much Madden during the week.

7 - No Johnson? This to me is more concerning than no Ames. I don't remember him getting hurt during the MSUM game so hopefully it's just a practice tweak and he is back for the Northern game or at the very least he is good out of the bye. He is a key piece to the offense.

8 - Oline grades out at average to average+. UMD ran some deep routes in the first half that required longer protect times, however, pocket continued to collapse without the need for blitzing. Have to shore this up going into the second half of the season.

9 - Very vanilla on offense. No designed QB runs. Nothing that hasnt been seen on film already. Assuming this was all on target for the game plan not to give Northern any additional film and to let Walljasper recover physically from the MSUM game.

10 - Broadcast and announcers may be one of the worst in the NSIC. Hate to call them out because I love that I can stream the games so I don't miss any, but do a little prep and take some pride in it. Spend the few minutes to learn the 2 deep and try to get a little insight ahead of kickoff.

Big second half for the Dogs with a real opportunity to finally get back in the playoffs, and even more awesome, hosting a game (or 2).

6 - I promise you Northern State talks about that flea flicker this week in their prep. That run by Pearson perhaps too. Two opposing viewpoints on those types of plays. You save them so they work against better opponents, or you get them on film so better opponents have to prepare for them. I'm a fan of the latter. That flea flicker especially isn't just about the flea flicker working again, it's about the defense THINKING about the flea flicker. Could buy some more running room on run plays when they have to respect the flea flicker and DB's and LB's in pass coverage can't just break off their pass coverage to play the run.
10 - listen to the KDAL 1610 or KAT 98.9 stream (depending on the game) on iHeart or TuneIn and mute the TV, though they might not be exactly in sync.. Jeff Papas does a fantastic job on the radio call.. wish they would just use him on the TV audio too..

Agree to disagree on #6. The trick plays are garbage (how'd that play where they put Walljasper out as a WR and had him fake like he missed the toss and the TE kept it work out) and do not work against a well coached team. To me the trick plays scream "I can't block well enough to just run the ball" or "I'm not talented enough to move the ball without something off the cuff". Those plays are typically all or nothing and 90+% of the time for UMD they are nothing. Giving up a down in a close game when you can get 3-4 yards a carry gets you L's.
