Ten years ago, this past weekend, CSU-Pueblo traveled to Texas and played Sam Houston State at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville. The T-Wolves throttled the Bearkats 47 to 21. It was not a close game. Going into the fourth quarter CSUP led 44 to 7. Coach Wristen emptied the bench allowing Sam Houston to score 2 touchdowns. For those who don’t know, Sam Houston was no cupcake. Later that season the Bearkats made the FCS playoffs and beat 3 teams before losing to North Dakota State in the semi-finals. The Bearkats lost to two National Champions that season, North Dakota State and CSUP. How often does a loss to two national champions happen in the same year?
Ten Years later, both CSUP and Sam Houston State have a record of 3 wins and 1 loss after 4 games. The Bearkats are no longer in the Southland Conference, however. They’re now playing at the FBS level in Conference USA. So far this season, they have wins over Rice, Hawaii and New Mexico State. Central Florida handed Sam Houston its only loss. By the way, Central Florida plays the Colorado Buffs this coming weekend.
