  • CIAA Tournament

The CIAA Tournament kicks off tomorrow with 4 womens games and 2 mens games (http://www.ciaatournament.org/brackets). The CIAA seeds their teams 1-6 for North and South and then alternates them on each side of the bracket. The first two days are being played at Bojangles Coliseum (older arena that was recently renovated and now home to the minor league hockey team) and Thursday - Saturday will be played at The Spectrum Center (Charlotte Hornets Home).

    Day 1 games:

    Womens

    #4S St. Augs v. #5N Chowan
    #3N Lincoln v. #6S LC
    #4N Bowie v. #5S Shaw
    #3S WSSU v. #6N ECSU

    Mens

    #4S St. Augs v. #5N Chowan
    #4N Lincoln v. #5S Fayetteville State

The mens' tournament is VSU's to lose; however, I think the real action will be in the womens' tournament. For example, due to a crazy 3 way tie in the North you have a quality Chowan womens team with a #5 seed (however, they have slid hard here at the end of the season). If they get the job done tomorrow then they face a VUU team who they only lost to by a basket a couple of days ago.

At this point the best bet is that both tournament winners will be coming out of the North this year.

Is it unusual for the CIAA tournament to be held the week before the PSAC and MEC? It seems like the CIAA tourney is always on the last weekend of the regular season for the other teams.

Usually, the CIAA Tourney was complete before the PSAC in past years. It's actually the same week for once.

Yeah, I think it's just how the dates lined up this year with March coming in on a Thursday. Typically the Tournament is complete before March.

Whoops ... My post meant to say: Is it unusual for the CIAA tournament not to be held the week before the PSAC and MEC? It seems like the CIAA tourney is always on the last weekend of the regular season for the other teams.

It always seems like the CIAA teams sit for a week before the bids are announced. That must stink for teams on the bubble ... practice for a week for games that may not happen.

The CIAA's being the same week as the rest makes for more drama all week! Usually we know what CIAA teams are in before the other two tournaments.

                  Women's

No upsets in yesterdays Women's games as the favorites won, with the only surprise being that Chowan only beat St. Augs by 5.

                  Men's

In the men's games The CIAA South Teams showed up with FSU and St. Augs both pulling out W's.

So far today we've had one "upset" as #6 from the North ECSU beat #3 from the South LC. ECSU had the overall better season record so not really sure this would be an upset, just goes to show the strength of the conference was in the North this year.

Currently #6 in the South WSSU is playing #3 in the North VUU. Score is tied at 17-17 in the first half.

                    Men's

No upsets in yesterdays men's action as all the favorites won; however, VSU only pulled out a 4 point win in a low scoring game (49-45).

                    Women's

#4N Bowie State beat #1S FSU in OT, and VUU killed any questions about their last outing with Chowan by destroying them 89-58 yesterday.

                    Today's Games

                    Women's

                    #3N Lincoln v. #2S JCSU
                    #3S WSSU v. #2N VSU

                    Men's

                    #2S Shaw v. #3N VUU
                    #2N Bowie v. #3S LC

Yep, and I wouldn't be surprised to see VSU go down tonight. Their last two outings haven't been great so we will see if they were able to regain their focus after having off yesterday.

On the other side of the bracket I'm thinking JCSU will get the W.

                        Women

As predicted the North is running away and all 4 semifinals teams are from the North. I expect VUU to beat Lincoln and VSU to beat Bowie (though they split the regular season).

Does VSU have some injuries or are they just in a funk?

No injuries. Just in a funk. St. Aug played good defense and is really long on the inside. Trey Brown and Philip Owens has to shoot better. I still think VSU will pull it out.

VUU girls are on another level. I don't see them losing.
