Take off the red and black colored glasses for a minute and look at how this could impact your program and school if deeper allegations are true.
Do you think there is anyone who values integrity more the PRES. JONES. If you can name another university president who had their school FB team forfeit a game because of player behavior, please name them. Other than 2 years of grade school teaching after her graduation in'72, the last 50 years of her life has been in service to her alma mater. Since being named interim president she has reined in the out of control spending, stabilized the enrollment and generally run the school in a responsible manner. I do not believe she would jeopardize that progress if she had the slightest hint of anything that could rebound to the detriment of CALU.
All of the allegations of impropriety as regards DS are based in WJU. If he in any way fudged the truth in his discussions with the search committee, I have no doubt he will be out in a blink of an eye. It would obviously hurt the MBB program, but to those of us who really enjoyed the ARMENTI GLORY YEARS will tell you, PRES. JONES absolutely does not view college athletics in the same way as her predecessor.
Meanwhile DS is on the job for day two and I personally look forward to the future of VULCANS MBB.

As a Cal fan, you have to trust their administration did its homework on him -- hopefully speaking to both sides of the situation.

Personally, I don't think his lawyers did him any favors with their comments. It actually made him look worse and opened up a lot more speculation.

The whole notion of paying anybody out of a checking account .... with money that came from where .... I can see some alarms.

As for the 'deeper allegations' ... To actually fire your best coach .... that's a bold move.
That's what makes me question those that say that Sancomb was fired over money. It just makes no sense to fire your best coach who has just lead your marque team to their first conference championship at any point, much less in MAY! If you couldn't afford him, I would think you knew that well before May and would have fired him then...If you wanted to avoid a student/player/alum back lash, you at least wait until after school is out. Early May is the absolute worst time you could chose to fire a popular and successful coach...That is, unless you find out about something that you believe gives you no choice but to fire him.

I'd also point out that if the administration was "out to get Sancomb" for some reason, I would think they would have a "short list" of potential replacements whom they had informal/unofficial conversations with and could get hired quickly. Fact that we are approaching two months without anyone being hired tells me that it is very possible that WJ's administration was caught totally flat footed.

Cal posted its current roster. Looks like six players carry over.

Because WBB didn't do the same, I'm going to assume the release was SANCOMB'S idea. Based on last year's stats that leaves 95.8 minutes of PT up for grabs. Who's up for some ball ???

I am not saying that President Jones isn't an incredible woman who is full of integrity. My point, is that something fishy is going on here and it seems to be a bigger deal, especially at a university who has had some integrity issues (i.e. football, which you mentioned). I don't see how an issue like this can be full vetted in 16 days. To think they know everything within a 16 day hiring window is a bit naive. I mentioned that on paper this is a homerun hire, I just think that it's a bit risky and that everything may not have been on the up and up. I hope that it works out for Cal U and their fans, I am just surprised at this quick decision based on Cal U's history and Sancomb's apparent history as well.

Other side of the coin ...

Sancomb was available. He's probably a Top 2-3 coach in the Atlantic Region.

The fact Cal even had a shot to get a coach of his pedigree -- in freaking June -- is amazing in itself.

Two-plus weeks to vet is a good amount of time. Not much else going on this time of year and I'm sure he occupied all their time.

For a once-proud but recently mediocre-at-best program ... you roll these dice all day long. I'm sure his contract was worded with many out-clauses just in case.

End of the day it's a coaching job in D2. If it fails, Cal U will survive and move on to the next one. But, if it works ... and it probably will ... they just hit a home run.

Just don't open any checking accounts. Let somebody else buy the chicken and pasta.

I can't say for everyone, but in every job I've ever interviewed for or taken there was a line to the effect that if I lied it was cause for immediate dismissal. Desperately in need of a coach. Outstanding, reputable winning coach available. Are there issues, certainly. But how long do you wait and risk someone else snapping him up while you fiddle around. Unless you have insider info or psychic powers, you make a reasonably well informed decision and see what happens. People need to stop making this out to be a major crime. His attorney is a civil law specialist and doesn't apparently deal in criminal law. So we're talking NCAA rules infractions which have zero to do with CAL U. If penalties are handed down they will be on WJU. Fortune favors the bold.

Some good points. I think people are naturally puzzled by the seeming contradictions between the defense lawyer's explanation and the firing of a highly regarded coach who loved wju. Ayn Rand had a great quote in her classic novel "Atlas Shrugged" that has been of great benefit in solving difficult problems:

"When you come to a seeming contradiction, check your assumptions."

One or more assumptions could be inaccurate:
                  1. Lawyer's portrayal of events
                  2. Competency and professionalism of wju administration
                  3. Severity of the violations
                  4. Root cause reason for dismissal

I hope Danny is vindicated as it is disheartening when good people fall from grace.

                    Re: Sancomb news conference...

Screw it. It was a tremendous hire for Cal. Roll the dice. It's a major loss for the MEC and WJ in particular (obviously).

Defending champion just blew itself up and has no coach heading in to July. It may not have any players by mid-July.

It's big loss for the conference ... going from a Big 3 to a Big 2. Although, Concord may be very good this year. The white LeBron down there may go for 45 a game. If they got him some help they will be nasty.

                      Re: Sancomb news conference...

Dont get me wrong, I think it IS a good hire for Cal from an on court standpoint. Just saying there are potential off court issues that may come into play. These issues MAY end up trumping the on court value of Sancomb. Cal is rolling the dice and taking a chance. May turn out great...may not. But from an on coirt standpoint, it is a chance almost any program eould probably be foolish not to take.

Seems to be a coach/representative for HS players especially interested in D2 schools with long ties to the WVIAC/MEC although he has sent some all through the Atlantic region. Overall not a bad friend for CALU to have via DS although I'm always a bit wary of people making a living in "amateur athletics".

He apparently is close to SANCOMB and has been a big supporter even getting a nice thank you tweet from @bsancomb for showing up at the introductory presser. If you're familiar with MR. DOLES, either positively or negatively, I would certainly like to hear your opinion. Might others have a different opinion, absolutely. But that's pretty much what message boards are about. Controversy and arguments, if well expressed and presented reasonably, are why we spend time here. Please let us hear from you.

Cat's like him give AAU coaches a good name! What he does is pray on the hopes of HS players and their parents to get their son/daughter into college on a "scholarship." For a price, this guy will "evaluate" the player for "athletic ability" and based on his assessment, will refer the player to colleges that he thinks the kid is most likely to get an offer from. This "evaluation" also leads to a lot of up-selling from Doles and his staff...Your son is good, but he could be GREAT if you just pay me to coach him up or pay for him to participate in one of my basketball camps. I'm sure if you did this, his skills would improve to the point were D1 schools start taking a serious look at him. If he doesn't improve, the best his current skill set will get him is interest from non-scholarship D3 teams.
