  • DII NIL Money?

So how much NIL money does the average DII player get? We've heard about the difficulty that DII's have in recruiting and keeping a team together because of NIL money. I've even heard people talk about the tremendous recruiting advantage that Nova Southeastern has because of their NIL money. While I'm sure NIL money plays some part in DII players going to some D1 programs, I wonder if the DII's having massive NIL dollars to entice transfers and recruits is little more than an excuse that fans use to explain away their failure to keep players AND failure to recruit.

It is very difficult to find specific figures for DII programs but with regard to Nova, the only thing with specifics I could fins was the Nova Southeastern Basketball NIL Club. It apparently has a monthly goal of $320 and last month(?) it get $125. Assuming it meets it's monthly goal of $320 every month that's $3,840/yr. It has 16 participating athletes. So each participating athlete would receive $240...That's for the year, not monthly.

That's an interesting find ("NIL Club"). Looks like you get access to exclusive content during the season if you donate. My wild guess is that represents only a fraction of the NIL income that Nova players receive.

For example, the UNLV football team has a monthly goal of $3,800 on the same NIL Club site.

    https://nilclub.com/unlv/football

Contrast that amount with the $100K that they (UNLV) allegedly promised to a single player last season:

I note that WLU Basketball is also part of the "NIL Club" (https://nilclub.com/west-liberty-uni...ens-basketball). But as of now they have $0 of their $280/mo goal. So now is the time for all the WLU fans that said college players should be paid or bemoaned that WLU doesn't have NIL money so that is why they lose their players or can't recruit to pony up! You said that players deserved to be paid....SOOOOOOO...PAY UP!!!!

As with many (most?...ALL?) things NCAA, the NIL rules are different for D1's than they are for DII. I believe that D1's can pay players directly from their general revenue while I don't think DII's can.

Correct, the lawsuit settlement was about D1 because of the March Madness money. That doesn't directly affect D2 - but it will eventually hurt because that March Madness money was a huge portion of the NCAA's revenue and helped pay for things like flying a D2 football team to the national championship in Texas.

In the past, 4.37% of NCAA operating revenue went to d2, about $8 million. Sponsors championships in 25 sports and some $ to conferences.

To clarify…. When you say “NIL money,” are you referring to money that is paid to student athletes by a business or through a 3rd party that is a legitimate exchange of services at determined market value and approved through the NIL GO clearinghouse?

We need to start putting disclaimers out there when these things are posted. You cannot, I repeat, cannot, just write a check to a player anymore and say it’s “NIL money.” That is no longer permissible.

The House settlement and revenue sharing was only applicable to Division 1, but the creation of NIL GO and the college sports commission to help govern NIL is for all of collegiate athletics.

NIL Go is applicable to all levels. It doesn’t distinctly call that out in the House settlement, but Division 2 athletes are required to submit NIL agreements through the clearinghouse. Spent wayyy too many hours reading and following this and that is my understanding.

Thats what Ross Dellenger (who was the one sitting in on the meetings and reporting in real time) also indicated.

So, regarding the OP, there would have to be an exchange of money based on services, and that exchange has to be reviewed and approved by NIL GO.

Which is how it should be. Players always should have been able to cash in on their celebrity status as long as its actual work. I imagine like in the pros, the school wouldn't let them use the school logos or uniforms.

100% agreed. I think the problem is there are just WAY too many people who simply believe a collective can just raise money and give it to a student athlete and say it's "NIL money." You were able to do that previously, but you cannot do that now. Duke, Kentucky, or Nova Southeastern.

The exchange of money based on the exchange of services has to be evaluated and approved by the clearinghouse. People can gripe and complain about that all they want. I'm just simply telling them what the rule is now lol.

This is all just comical to envision at this level. Terms like 'celebrity status' ... having a hard time comprehending that in D2.

I'd love to see some real coin given to our athletes but it just seems so far-fetched.

Looking around the Atlantic, I'd say IUP and West Liberty are the only two schools with enough of followings (in basketball).

And, while Joe is going to be strong this year and the bandwagons will likely come back, he lost about half (or more) of the fanbase the past two years.

IUP has enough of a corporate base (and some heavy-hitting, business-owning individual supporters) to possibly get in to this game but I don't see it happening.
