Would someone let me know what the rules are in scheduling non D2 schools . While i dont mind a few games it seems to just pad the record of the school and the coach. These should be treated as exhibitions.

I think one of the reasons teams end up playing NAIAs has to do with being able to find opponents willing to play. With 19 conference games in the MIAA that leaves you seven games to find unless you take part in a regional challenge. That leaves between 98 and 126 games you need to find to fill out the schedule.
Each school has different priorities for their non-conference schedules.
Some teams are in a good position and want to play a tough schedule to help their SOS.
Some are in a position to try and build up their WL record against D2 teams and will try to get bad D2 teams to up that record.
Some are in a rebuilding mode and want to build confidence in their players so they go after the NAIAs - which can sometimes backfire if they play really good NAIA teams.
You also have to look at the economics of scheduling. The MIAA is going to get home games from the NAIA teams and may need to do home-and-home series for D2 teams. Most MIAA teams do well enough in home attendance that they need a certain number of home games in the non-conference to help out the budget.
Next year that changes to playing I think 22 games which will cut a lot of the non-con games.
