  • MIAA Women's Conference Play

As conference play begins tonight here are the current "standings" with the overall record being the determining factor. What do we currently know about these teams?? I think that the majority of us know that conference play will be the real measuring tool with how good the conference is each year.

Any surprises either good or bad so far???
Central Mo has played some tough teams early in the year.

    Fort Hays State 0-0 0.000 5-0 1.000 W5
    Missouri Western 0-0 0.000 4-0 1.000 W4
    Emporia State 0-0 0.000 5-1 0.833 W2
    Nebraska Kearney 0-0 0.000 5-1 0.833 W4
    Northwest Missouri 0-0 0.000 5-1 0.833 W4
    Pittsburg State 0-0 0.000 4-1 0.800 W3
    Central Oklahoma 0-0 0.000 4-2 0.667 W1
    Lincoln 0-0 0.000 4-2 0.667 W2
    Rogers State 0-0 0.000 4-2 0.667 W2
    Central Missouri 0-0 0.000 4-3 0.571 W1
    Missouri Southern 0-0 0.000 2-2 0.500 W2
    Newman 0-0 0.000 2-3 0.400 W2
    Northeastern State 0-0 0.000 2-4 0.333 L3
    Washburn 0-0 0.000 1-4 0.200 L3
If neccessary, the MIAA will apply its Weighted Index Formula to adjust the women's basketball standings in the final weeks leading up to the 2021 MIAA Basketball Tournament.

Only thing I can say about NW is they are looking much improved. Their only loss was to a good Southwest Minn St team. NW actually lead 27-6 at the end of the first quarter. However, one of the players went down with a knee injury (after being out all year last year with an injury to the same knee) at the end of the 1st quarter. It was eerily quiet in the gym except for the player being in obvious pain. I think it shook the young team and they were outscored 58-21 the rest of the game after that.

They are very young- 15 FR/SO, no juniors, 3 seniors. I still think they are a year or two away but they are headed the right direction under Coach Meyer.

Was at the Newman vs Pitt game last night. Looks like Newman will be undermanned this year, They have a 6'3" Frosh who is long and athletic, but needs some grooming. Nothing else I saw from them tells me they'll be anything but a bottom feeder.

Pitt looked good, had 28 assists on 33 made baskets...playing a lot more unselfishly this year than they did all of last year. Still small, so it'll be interesting to see how they play against teams with good size.

Gonna go watch the NSU vs NW game tonight. Back at Pitt Saturday vs, UCO...hope they have an answer for Kelsey Johnson...she's an excellent post!

Post players better get ready for Kelsey Johnson at UCO...she's bigger this year and if the refs are going to let her play like she did Saturday...she'll be difficult to handle.

Tonight will be a good measuring stick for NW. So far they have played 3 of the worst teams in the conference but they took care of business. While UCM is not having their usual success so far this year, they are still highly talented. Even a close loss on the road would be a good indicator for NW. A win could mean some adjusted expectations for the team this year.

Jennies/Western game went OT. 2 minutes into the 2nd qtr, Western lead 27-10, but the Jennies lead 28-27 at halftime. Each team had a chance to win as Western missed a shot at the end of regulation and the Jennies missed one at the end of OT.

The Jennies have a depth problem as the bench only played 18 of the 225 minutes. 4 of the starters played over 40 minutes (3 playing all 45). Nelson was in foul trouble or all 5 would have probably played over 40. Holden's injury has a huge impact on depth.

The Jennies are 4-4 against D2 opponents. The 4 losses are by 1,3,4 & 6 points. The 4 teams that beat them (SWOSU, Drury, Union & Western) have a combined 33-5 record against D2 opponents. None of the 4 have lost more than 2.

First time I've seen UCM play this year. They looked out of sorts. Oliva Nelson with 9 turnovers is definitely an oddity. Depth certainly appears to be a problem, which is surprising. Thought they were deeper. I know Holden is out with a knee injury, which is a big loss, she's a force down low.

I'll get to see them in person Saturday!

I was going to post the same thing about depth. During game I thought if they get a player with COVID or role an ankle it would be big trouble for the jennies. Hard to win if your that thin. Just such a long season.

It was good to see Vigil come off the bench and hit a couple of big shots in the 2nd half. Hackerott was having an off night and Northwest was not coming out on her, daring her to shoot.
