We have a big history of "playing down" to teams on the men's side.

I need Simple's help here....why does the NSU bench get warned and yelled at every freaking game for standing when the ball is on the other end of the court? We don't have the ref that normally calls that, I just don't get it.

Cuz, by the book only the head coach is supposed to be standing while the ball is in play, except as a spontaneous response to a good play. I think that it is a good rule and does need to be enforced. Just keeps things clean.

I paid $10 tonight to watch two hideously entertaining basketball games in a venue better suited for a Greek bath house. Both contests were controlled by the Cougars throughout and yet the night ended with two Viking victories. Despite all that the person who commanded the most notoriety was men's game official Mark Riggs.

He set the tone by calling an unfathomable percentage of the fouls in the first half, including a befuddling amount of consecutive calls during seemingly normal jostling for rebounds. What made this experience even more bizarre were the constant reenactments he performed on members of each coaching staff to demonstrate the contact that justified the blowing of his whistle. Each coaching staff will undoubtedly prepare for their next encounter with Mssr Riggs by wearing suits with extra padding in the rib area. He started the second half in a much more subdued manner, after possibly incurring the wrath of his fellow official during the break, but still found a way to make his presence felt with theatrical calls at pivotal moments. Hopefully the NSIC office takes note of this performance and gives him consideration for Player of the Week.

Next best was Busack's 27 points and 9 boards though. Goodness am I glad we picked him up.

Understandably, Margenthaler couldn't take it anymore. Brutal officiating in Fayette tonight. MSU blows game and had a little help along the way. Only shot is to win the conference tourney now.

Agree. Officiating a complete joke favoring the home team, and allowing them to get back into the game.

So....I didn't see the game, but given comments went and looked at some stats and play by play to see if they backed up comments. First, there was only a difference of 2 fouls between teams, Mankato 20 UIU 18. Ft's UIU 13-17, Mankato 14-20. Pretty even overall. I next went and looked at play by play starting at the 8:41 mark in 2nd half when Mankato was up by 15...to see if fouls got UIU back in game.

I really don't see how fouls got UIU back in game, several missed shots and TO's by Mankato and timely shots by UIU allowed them to crawl back in. There wasn't a disparity in fouls called or FT's attempted (Mankato had more).

Always unfortunate when the focus is on the official rather than the two teams which are playing. I've seen it happen too many times.

I didn't watch the game either, but the one flaw in your analysis is that this play by play tracker doesn't address missed calls or missed fouls. So if it was more that fouls weren't called when they should have been or that kind of thing, we wouldn't know just by reading. That being said, if the Mankato fans have a perception that the reason was actual fouls called against the Mavs, then this obviously does point out flaws in their reasoning.

There could be some flaw in the analysis as you note, but just wanted to take a look to see if there were fouls called that lead to tons of FT's, etc....I saw a lot of missed shots in there from Mankato and very few fouls called on either team throughout that stretch. Was also looking to see if there was any disparity in total fouls, etc...when they get the game archived will watch it, but from just looking at the data and play by play it doesn't look too lopsided.

There were 6 technicals (4 on the Mavs and 2 on the Cocks) in that game!?!?!

Looks like the first 4 were called on a player from UIU and Mankato at same time (once in first half and once in second half). MSU racked up 2 in OT after they got down by a bunch.
