We're roughly 10 days away from the release of the Preseason Coaches Poll so this seems like a proper time to prognosticate on the coming season. These are my projections for that release.

Preseason Player of the Year: Kyreese Willingham

    1. Mankato
    2. Moorhead
    3. Duluth
    4. Augie
    5. SMSU
    6. Bemidji
    7. USF
    8. Concordia
    9. Winona
    10. Wayne
    11. Minot
    12. Northern
    13. SCSU
    14. Mary
    15. Crookston

I'll concede I am high on the transfers Cody brought in and how they fit together on paper, how it will translate to on court performance will have to be proven. I think Concordia and Bemidji also have a chance to surprise people if some of their transfers can come together. SMSU's projected standing is heavily reliant on Aeron Stevens continuing to produce FT attempts at obscene levels in more minutes than last season.

I think the top 3 are a step above the rest but they each have questions that will have to be answered. Mankato needs Kirkman (this is EXTREMELY painful and I doubt it will get easier when I finally see him in a Mavs uniform, maybe its best if it I just think about it as the player to be named later in the Mike Busack trade), David Harmon, and Drew Daniel to fill the gaps left by Malik Willingham and Dylan Peeters,

Duluth has a in their offense now that Drew Blair has mercifully moved on and based on the new pieces it's going to be group approach to replace that production. Defensively they should be solid with Katona and Brown returning so maybe they lean into that compared to previous seasons.

Moorhead has the most continuity among these teams in the backcourt and on the wing with Beeninga, Price, and Kinsey. They're completely unproven in the front court unless you believe this is the year Jacob Jennisen (SIXTH YEAR JUNIOR!) finally makes the leap.

We're nearly all the way back.

This nugget is why I love reading your posts. They remind me of a time when SNL was actually funny. Never change, my friend.

You can search Michael Busack on twitter, and he features a picture of his one glorious season as a Viking.

Mavs will really miss Dylan Peters. Still the team to beat

I like SMSU at 3 or 4 or 5. But I think they will 6 or 7 in the poll

with Texas Tom moving on, Justin Weick is now the easy leader for complaining about refs. Ugh. as bad as Mike leaf

THIS. Mavs had the ability to switch 1-5 at all times which I’m not sure anyone else could do. Most teams only switch everything in late clock situations but the defensive versatility of Peeters, Kyreese and Hazekamp allowed them to switch everything at all times and still have no obvious mismatch.

Life has been busy, so I’m a little late to the party.

I honestly have no idea what to expect anymore. Augie’s roster is dramatically different with several new good-on-paper-but-untested-in-the-NSIC components. On the one hand, newness is always fun and interesting in its own way. On the other hand, I would’ve enjoyed at least one more year of Arhman Lewis and Caden Kirkman (I can only assume they would’ve found a home at a D1 after another statistically successful season or two).

I think if Akoi can go from “really good some games but also near-invisible some games” to “consistently good” and Hinker works his way into the top tier of NSIC big men, Augie has a chance to be a top 5-6 team. But it will also really depend on these new guards and what they bring to the table. And obviously Coach Schilling being able to take the team in his own direction and prove he’s as good on the sidelines as he was on the court will be a huge factor. Again, new can be fun, but it will certainly be interesting to see what this 2024-25 Viking squad looks like once the season is underway.

As far as the rest of the NSIC goes, I barely know what’s going on anymore. I am really surprised the Mavericks were able to bring Kyreese back. Hard not to believe they’ll be the clear #1, especially adding pieces in like Kirkman and some of the other new talent.

As Augieholic mentioned, Duluth will likely be in the conversation, even with some of their key pieces (finally) moving on.

Can’t believe Beeninga is still in college. Same with Sutherland at Bemidji.

All in all, it’s important to remember, as an Augie fan, that this is a new situation, even if Coach Schilling was on Coach Billeter’s staff for the past few years. I don’t expect us to finish first when it’s all said and done, but I think a top 4 or 5 finish in a conference as deep as the NSIC in Coach Schilling’s first year would be seen as a big success.

Can’t believe exhibition games will be here soon. Seems like I waited all summer for basketball season and now it’s barreling at us like a train. Should be fun.

It is honestly a little unexpected, but I'm happy to see it. There can't be too many starting fives better.

Msum leads ndsu for 38 of 40 minutes but couldn’t finish out game. Lose by 4. Pretty good first showing for dragons.

Looks like you gave the Bison all that they could handle. Good effort.

I think MSUM wins a series vs. them. And they’re expected to contend for the summit title. Just upholds the opinion that most of us have that the NSIC - at least the top half of it - is better than the summit.
