We're roughly 10 days away from the release of the Preseason Coaches Poll so this seems like a proper time to prognosticate on the coming season. These are my projections for that release.
Preseason Player of the Year: Kyreese Willingham
1. Mankato
2. Moorhead
3. Duluth
4. Augie
5. SMSU
6. Bemidji
7. USF
8. Concordia
9. Winona
10. Wayne
11. Minot
12. Northern
13. SCSU
14. Mary
15. Crookston
I'll concede I am high on the transfers Cody brought in and how they fit together on paper, how it will translate to on court performance will have to be proven. I think Concordia and Bemidji also have a chance to surprise people if some of their transfers can come together. SMSU's projected standing is heavily reliant on Aeron Stevens continuing to produce FT attempts at obscene levels in more minutes than last season.
I think the top 3 are a step above the rest but they each have questions that will have to be answered. Mankato needs Kirkman (this is EXTREMELY painful and I doubt it will get easier when I finally see him in a Mavs uniform, maybe its best if it I just think about it as the player to be named later in the Mike Busack trade), David Harmon, and Drew Daniel to fill the gaps left by Malik Willingham and Dylan Peeters,
Duluth has a in their offense now that Drew Blair has mercifully moved on and based on the new pieces it's going to be group approach to replace that production. Defensively they should be solid with Katona and Brown returning so maybe they lean into that compared to previous seasons.
Moorhead has the most continuity among these teams in the backcourt and on the wing with Beeninga, Price, and Kinsey. They're completely unproven in the front court unless you believe this is the year Jacob Jennisen (SIXTH YEAR JUNIOR!) finally makes the leap.
We're nearly all the way back.
