  • UCM men's and women's basketball

The women's team had major transfer subtractions but I feel they are still under achieving. I thought the men's team would be doing better they are about in the 7-10 slot for the MIAA tournament if all goes well. Any insight on the teams. I am not seeing much improvement in the record over the last coach on the men's side. Anyone else see a brighter side?

I think patience is probably needed on the men's side. SNU didn't have a winning record against a full GAC schedule until their 5th year in the league and then went 21-1 in the league in year 6. Then proceeded to win the league four times in six years. Adam's a really good coach. I don't doubt he'll turn it around. It's just not going to be super fast. He's a big development guy and I think the slower start to his tenure there is probably a pretty good indicator of where things were when he arrived.

The lack of depth has been killing the women. They had three players record double-doubles in a loss at Emporia. I'd agree their underachieving, but they'll need somebody else to start stepping up if there is going to be a postseason run.

My impressions watching SNU tin 2021-22 was that Bohac was as good a coach as a DII school can ask for. Team was really well constructed and played together well. I think the tournament run and upsetting Northwest the next year speaks for itself. Your men haven't been .500 in conference since 2017-18, and they're in reach of doing that this year, it looks like progress.

Thanks for the update I hadn't realized it has been that long since the men had a winning conference record.

Doesn’t it seem like the Ucm women have had depth issues for 3 or 4 years? I would think slifer would understand the need for more depth.

You cannot grind players into the ground with too many minutes. They beat Missouri Western but had three players go 40+ minutes (one player went the entire 45 minutes since it was an overtime game). That is just crazy. Yea, you win, but at what cost? They lost to 10 - 10 Northwest Missouri in the next game by almost 20.

I think what Central is facing is the transfer portal. You lose two starters, and it is hard to build depth when quality bench players can transfer to other schools and get more playing time. But definitely a tough year for them. Absent winning the conference tournament, don't see them making the NCAA tournament. And this is a team that a little over a year ago, was ranked #3 in the nation at one time. Crazy how things can go south....really quick!

Did he know he was losing Littrell and Nelson? If those were surprises then you see how he wouldn't have thought he needed anyone else. Sometimes you just miss on recruits too, either having a number of players all go elsewhere or you think a couple players will contribute and it turns out they don't. He's had enough success I wouldn't hold it against him once, if he misses again next year that could be trouble.

He had to know Olivia was leaving, UCM doesn't have her Master's Degree.

You also have to assume a player isn't going to stay 5 years. So your recruiting strategy needs to be ready for that.

See how they do against Fort Hays State a second time. The first time was ugly. Very ugly.

Oliva went through Senior Day last season, Brooke did not. So yes, he had to know Oliva was leaving.

I have no knowledge about Brooke's situation...my daughter played club ball with Olivia...so I am privy to some inside info on her part.

She is having a great season at Idaho. Just goes to show you the talent gap is not that great between some D1 and D2 players....D1 just has a lot more elite players on a team.

Littrell is coming off the bench for Creighton, had 12 points in 18 minutes against UConn a couple weeks ago. Wild that those two missed the tournament at the D2 level, really shows how good this region is.

Yep. At one point Central Missouri was #3 in the country last year (and with those two rightfully so). But then the wheels came off and the team underachieved the rest of the season. Strange that happened to a team with a coach that is very, very good. Just shows how quickly things can turn with the transfer portal now.

I think you have a point here. Something is wrong internally. These two got to the final 4 as freshman and never achieved that same success before transferring out. With the coach's new extension is he just waiting until it runs out and then retiring. Seems like he has lost the drive.
