The record isn't anything to write home about this year, but teams would be wise to give Darren Tighe a look. He's at Dakota State right now, and also had a good run at basketball coaching factory Mayville State. Probably isn't a big enough name for the Northern alumni base, but I think he could be a good fit in Bismarck.

In general though, people seem to want "a Northern guy". Saw a tweet from Logan Doyle echoing it, and I'm sure he's not alone. Which is a little funny to me, since Meyer wasn't a Northern guy until he got to Aberdeen.

We need to know what Carter Evans thinks, he was always better than Logan Doyle.

Meyer fit the mold, that's what matters. Just simply being a Northern guy doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good hire. That's silly.

Agreed. I'm just helping push the narrative I've seen often....like how Q was a bad hire in ST CLOUD (not Sioux Falls) because he wasn't a St Cloud guy!

Thats just one guys opinion, mine. There are a lot of people trying to change my mind, but not going to happen. I would always support hiring an alum, especially one who has had success, over hiring an outsider.

You do hear people say that, and quite frankly I think it would be foolish to limit the coaching search to that pool. Northern has been fortunate to go from Wachs to Olson to Meyer to Sather over 60+ years. But that is not where the new hire will likely come from.

For the record, I usually agree as long as the candidates are relatively equal (I tend to believe they were, though Putz coming from JUCO level could possibly have been a ding against him at the time. Now he's in the A-10 as a recruiting coordinator, if people were wondering).

Am I crazy to wonder if they look at Ryan Thompson from BHSU?

I'm biased but I don't really believe that they were that equal. Putz won the national DII JUCO title in 2021 and they finished 3rd in 2022 as the head coach both years and coach q was the 3rd chair at west texas. Kind of a different level of leadership.
