I think something missing in the “transfer value” analysis is what value may be available for those looking to transfer. For most (if not all) the players on this list the value is likely not monetary (or not significant money). For many players on the list the value may be simply trying to find a better fit (more playing time, etc) or trying to find a program that wins more. Doesn’t matter the level, but nobody is happy if they are part of a losing program. For example, it is probably not a good move for players to transfer from winning d2 programs to struggling d1 programs? It’s a much different analysis than for major D1 programs/players where players receive hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to play.

As good as Johnson is, there is no guarantee a transfer to a mid major program would be a good move for him. He will have to weigh the real risks associated with such a move to being in a very good situation at Msum. I am confident that many players have made the move in the past and regretted their decision to do so. Hopefully, he chooses to stay on his path to becoming one of the all time great Dragons.

I've always assumed that if Carson leaves it would be to a mid-major first. Feels like Big 10/12 staff would want to see how he competes with mid-major competition before taking him for his last two years.
As for his defense, I thought he was solid this year. Has good defensive posture, shuffles on his feet well & quickly. He's very smart about his hands and when to slap down for strip-steals or dig-in on posts. Not quite as quick as a Jacob Beeninga-type defensive guard, but he's not a total sieve that you need to "hide" on defense. How that translates against much bigger guards in D1 would be a different equation.
