GAC Basketball 2025-2026

Tonight the Great American Conference opens conference play. The GAC has looked pretty strong this season with 2 of their teams in the top 10 of the Massey rankings and those same 2 teams ranked in the top 15 of the Coaches Poll.

The opening weekend will include the cross state games with all 6 teams from Oklahoma traveling to Arkansas for 2 games. Last year's reigning regular season champion is Southern Nazarene the Conference Tournament Champ was the Harding Bisons.

With the GAC struggling in the recent past to have any tournament success besides SNUs short run where they knocked off NW Mo, seeing two teams ranked very highly at the beginning of the season is a good sign if the GAC wants to have more than 1 bid for the first time since 2023 as well as the first post season tournament win.

Harding looked good vs SWOSU. Very good perimeter defending. SWOSU didn't score until 5 minutes into the game and only had 22 points in the first half.

Harding looked good vs SWOSU. Very good perimeter defending. SWOSU didn't score until 5 minutes into the game and only had 22 points in the first half.

Good opening showing from the Bisons, SNU got out early and controlled the lead for the entire game.

Northern played both Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene on opening weekend, and if those 2 teams are truly top 15 teams nationally then Northern (and Jamestown for that matter) is better than I expected. However, I don't think that is the case. The NSIC does not appear to be as strong as it has been in recent years, so that may open the door for another GAC team in the Central Region. Teams obviously grow throughout the season so it will be interesting to see how those GAC teams look at the end of the year, but I was not super impressed with what I saw.

Owens scored 18 points in two Reddies’ victories - against Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central - to open GAC play. Against the Savage Storm, he went 8-for-10 from the floor - 2-of-3 from the 3-point arc - and grabbed six rebounds. Against ECU, he scored the Reddies’ first 12 points. He made 7-of-9 shots to post a 78.9 field goal percentage for the week.

#theGAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Wesley Booker, G, Harding, Gr., Mount Vernon, Arkansas
Booker helped the Bisons extend their win streak to six after he averaged 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in victories against Southwestern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State. He totaled six defensive rebounds, a block and a steal against the Bulldogs. He grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds against the Rangers. He added three blocks.
