UAA lands a couple JC guards.

6’2 shooter Cole Johnson out Colorado Northwest CC. 41% three point shooter who averaged 18 a game. UAA has had quite a few guards like this the last few years that have had mixed results, hopefully with a little more diversified attack this season, Cole will find open looks easier to come by than those that came before him.

6’1 Elijah Mobley according to film appears to be that quick, dynamic guard that UAA has not had in a few years. His apparent ability to get into the paint and collapse a defense will help shooters get looks. Started at a very successful (26-5 Las Positas) California JC.

Overall I’m more excited by this class Rusty has put together than any I’ve seen in the last 5 years or so.

Added quickness and athleticism. Some size at the 3 and the 4 spots (Machar and Sylas Williams) . A guard that can get into the lane (Mobley) . Guys that can put the ball in the bucket (Williams, Mobley and Johnson) . And even a decent Alaska kid in Marek Hajdukovich.

One of the biggest keys to the year will be if 6’10 sophomore big man Lyman Simmons comes off his red shirt year and shows he’s ready to be a solid GNAC big man. With all the 6’6, 6’7 forwards around him? UAA will hopefully be able to compete on the boards in a manner they haven’t been able to in years.

Sounds like a very athletic group, kudos to the UAA staff for doing some fine recruiting.

Seems like things are pretty slow right now on the verbal commits website.

not that I’ve heard of at this point. I know he was talking to both D1 and D2s with some Twitter buzz a few weeks ago. But have seen nothing else since.

CWU adds yet another D1 transfer in former West Georgia point guard Demetrius Johnson! He was previously a standout player at Highland JC in Illinois.

Does he have any link to CWU and state of Washington?

No, he is from Arizona it appears. Went to Juco in Illinois before West Georgia. The 2 Siena transfers are both new to Washington, as well. Michael Ojo is from Virginia and went to prep school in Georgia before Siena. And Bralyn Smith is from Texas and went to prep school in NJ before Siena.

I'm always curious how a guy from 1,000-3,000 miles away finds CWU. But I bet the power of social media makes us even closer today.

Another thing that is puzzling is some of these portal guys can't get off the bench or play much in division one, they go division 2 and have excellent success, then they portal back up to division 1.

Going to the way back machine, Western Oregon's Tanner Omlid, who was from Monmouth, went to Army on the east coast and was sixth man before getting hurt. But it really wasn't the life he wanted so he transferred to Western Oregon, became an All-American and West Coast player of the year. But his career didn't stop there. He went overseas to play pro in Portugal and was the most valuable player of that League. He might still be playing. I'm not sure he would have that same post collegiate career portaling back up to division 1.

A hint for portal players: Don't get tired of success.

Meanwhile, Evans, Moriarty, La Tour, and Mora from SPU are all in the portal still. I think they're trying to find division 1 teams to play for so they can get extra eligibility because of the juco ruling.

Also no word on Mav Sanders but CWU appears to have replaced all their losses already

I looked at the stats of these guys what a bunch of entitled dudes. If your division one and you're trolling around a bunch of 10-point a game guys in d2, that's a recipe to get fired.

I'm not a basketball guru, but Maverick Sanders is an excellent player...................who can be a dominant D2 player in the final two years. I figure if you haven't been picked up in the portal, and your two teammates who went into the portal at the same time have been with their new schools for a month, why don't you recommit to the team who's had great success during your first two years, a GNAC championship, a GNAC tourney championship and twice played in second round of the national tourney.

Agree 100%, but that would mean your buddies on X or whatever, wouldn't give you props for going back to CWU. Well, some might. I love those posts, "I'm going to Backwoods Tech! Respect my decision."

1 -- Backwoods Tech sucks, no one is impressed even if they are d1.
2 -- Why do I have to respect your foolish decision?

because they likely already gave his scholarship to another player. they can't be expected to sit and wait for him to come back.
