  • Any new news about Conference Carolina’s expansion?

I know there's going to be new options coming up for the future after additional schools look at considering adding football, that along with schools deciding to make a conference change, if considered.

I'm just waiting for Mount Olive and Francis Marion to add football. Also, it's time for CNU to finally ditch D3 and the crazy conference affiliations they have gotten themselves into.

It's no secret I've been cheering for the CNU Captains to join the Carolinas for a while now. That Coast-2-Coast is just a mess; they're Independents with a "conference championship tournament" for all sports.

I sometimes bring up Salisbury as a program the PSAC should target. They expand the geographic footprint a bit, but would be a perfect fit in the conference culturally with strong field hockey and lacrosse programs to go along with strong football.

I would agree only if the PSAC consolidated a few schools. I don't think the league needs more members at this point. If they could get rid of the privates and say 2 or 3 publics closed or consolidated and got the league to 12 full time members... would be prime to target Salisbury and the likely Frostburg at that point since they have a long history together.

If the league was willing to go just one more year with an odd number, there's a good chance everything would've sorted itself out. But Lackawanna was too good to pass up...

Legal, I agree 100%. One or all of those schools would be excellent football additions to Conference Carolinas.

I am surprised that some of those schools have not been closed. They have already merged a few in name: Penn West (Boro, Clarion, and Cal).

Regarding teams to add to the PSAC, I would love to see them add Frostburg and Salisbury. I realize that they are both in Maryland, but I think that they would bring a lot to the PSAC.

Frostburg and Salisbury used to have a history and for years it appeared that they where joined at the hip. But clearly, that has ended. If there was really a burning desire to "get back together" they would have tried to have preiodic athletic meetings (DII and D3 schools do play regularly). Since Frostburg States move to DII and the MEC in 2019, they haven't met on the athletic fields of either school. At this point, I would say that Frostburg as about as much of a burning desire to be in the same athletic conference as Frostburg has with Bowie State. I don't think they would be opposed to being in the same conference, but I don't see it as something that they are burning to do. With the recent changes in conference membership for both the MEC and the PSAC, I would imagine that each at least made a call to Salisbury to see if they might be interested. Fact that Salisbury is not in one of these conferences speaks volumes about their desire to move to DII.

Boat, I didn't know that many (if any) D2 schools played D3 in any sports. I could just be out of the loop.

Can I ask for examples? I know any of those games would not count for the playoffs.

                    Thank you sir.

Sorry, I know you weren't talking to me, but I can provide some for football at least.

The most common one is you often see is GLIAC teams scheduling non-conference games against teams in the D3 WIAC. Both conferences are largely comprised of public institutions with high enrollments relative to the rest of the division, both have long histories of extremely successful programs on the gridiron, and both have low membership for football that requires them to seek out more non-conference games than the average conference. Add in the fact that they're based in neighboring states, and it's a no-brainer that they keep scheduling each other.

It happens in other areas too (you usually see at least one D3 in the South pick up a D2 opponent every year as well), but the GLIAC-WIAC relationship is probably the most notable one I can think of

For Football in the NE region, because the PSAC has a mandated 10 game conference schedule, D3 opponents don't happen often. The MEC/WVIAC when membership was higher, had a similar conference mandated schedule that was nearly round robin if i recall. Just not many opportunities in those 2 leagues for D3 games.

The NE10 does play some D3 games as they are on an island of sorts way up north, so they take what games they can get. The 2 closest leagues to them being the PSAC/MEC and because of conference mandated scheduling, not a lot of opportunities.

All of what you say is true about the NE-10, but they don't play any D3 games either. Last one I could find was Merrimack vs. Rowan all the way back in 2012. The majority of them only play 10 game schedules now and still need to have a home-and-home with another NE-10 opponent to even get to that many games.

For a time I think it was because of the same reasons you outlined for the WVIAC/MEC and PSAC, having a big conference schedule, but now that they've lost so many members I'm not sure why they don't schedule more D3 competition, and I've always wondered what the reasoning is there.

Don't apologize. I appreciate the knowledge.

With the amount of D2 and D3 programs between VA and the Carolinas, it's not uncommon to see D3 schools schedule up. For example, this year Brevard (D3, but formerly D2) played and beat Erskine (D2). Also, Greensboro College (D3) made a big jump and played Davidson (D1 FCS non scholarship).
