  • List of Former DII Football schools since 2000

As I was noticing some of the teams we have lost over the last couple of years I started thinking about just how many we have lost the last 20 years or so. I started writing down a list of all the teams I could think of that are no longer in D2 I know I am likely missing a couple here and there especially those who tried to transition into d2 but didn't stay after a year or two. So if I am missing any please add to the list.

In no particular order, we no longer have:

    Abilene Christian
    Bryant
    Incarnate Word
    Lamar
    NC Central
    North Dakota
    South Dakota
    North Dakota St
    South Dakota St
    Dixie State
    Merrimack
    North Alabama
    Tarleton St
Augustana (they're still here but looking to transition to d1)
    Brevard
    McMurry
    Nebraska Omaha
    Azusa Pacific
    OK Panhandle St
    Cheyney
    Florida Tech
    Humboldt State
    CW (LIU) Post
    Malone
    Mansfield
    MN Crookston
    Paine College
    St. Cloud St
    Saint Joseph's
    St. Paul's
    Stillman
    Urbana
    WV Tech
    Western Washington
    Morningside
    Northern Colorado
    Central Arkansas
    Mn. Morris

I don't know if the info is available but when I see CHEYNEY on this list I know there needs to be a clarification as to why individual schools have left D2. CHEYNEY left simply because they couldn't sustain any vaguely competitive sports programs let alone the minimum required of a D2 school. That topic was decided on the PSAC page long ago. On the other hand schools like MIAMI-OHIO and the various Dakota schools have generally done a decent job since their move up. Any chance for such a clarification ??

Miami Ohio hasn't been in D2. Is that a typo?

Miami Ohio joined the MAC in 1947, the 2nd year of the conference's existence.

Western Washington, Humboldt State, and Azusa Pacific, are all still division 2. They just stupidly all eliminated football, but they are still playing division 2 sports.

I made the exact list, but I am not sure where it is.

                Notes:

                Lamar didn't play D2 since 2000.
                Paine never had a team.

Paine had a team for one season (2014).

Malone did the same. Still a part of the GMAC, just not a football school anymore

Georgia Southwestern doesn't belong; I think it may have been a club team. I believe the same applies to King (they were NAIA in 2003, but I'm pretty sure they didn't have an NAIA football team that recently).

I didn't do any research, just copied from wiki. No source was provided when either school was added to the list. Was GSW still in NAIA, they didn't join the PBC until 2006. Queens College might have also been only a club team.
