Mixed feelings on that. I trust the people for West Florida that make those decisions will guide UWF in the right direction as they always have. Glad I don't have to make those decisions.

        Random stat of the day

Since 2000, there have been 44 schools who played at least one season of D2 football, who no longer play D2 Football.

50% of them have either closed the school, dropped the program, moved to D3 or NAIA.

I'd like to see that list. Out of curiosity, NOT questioning your info.

I've counted 23 such schools so far (though Westminster might be a tricky one since their last GLIAC season was 1999 and they joined the D3 PAC in 2000):

Westminster (Pa.) (GLIAC): Moved to D3 after 1999-2000 season
Morningside (NCC): Moved to NAIA after 2000-2001 season
                UMass-Lowell (NE-10): Dropped after 2002 season
Minnesota-Morris (NSIC): Moved to D3 after 2003 season
West Virginia Tech (WVIAC): Dropped to NAIA after 2005 season
Mansfield (PSAC): Dropped after 2006 season
Western Washington (GNAC): Dropped after 2008 season
St. Paul's College (CIAA): Closed after 2010 season
McMurry (LSC): Moved to D3 after playing 2014 season in LSC
Paine (SIAC): Dropped after 2014 season
Stillman (SIAC): Dropped after 2015 season prior to dropping to NAIA
Oklahoma Panhandle (LSC): Moved to NAIA after 2016 season
Brevard (SAC): Moved to D3 after 2016 season
Cheyney (PSAC): Dropped after 2017 season
Humboldt State (now Cal Poly Humboldt) (GNAC): Dropped after 2018 season
Malone (GMAC): Dropped after 2018 season
Minnesota-Crookston (NSIC): Dropped after 2019 season
St. Cloud State (NSIC): Dropped after 2019 season
Florida Tech (GSC): Dropped after 2019 season
Urbana (MEC): Closed in 2020; dropped after 2019 season
Azusa Pacific (LSC): Dropped after 2020 season
Simon Fraser (LSC): Dropped after 2022 season
Alderson-Broaddus (MEC): Dropped prior to 2023 season; in process of closing after fall semester

That's 13 programs which were discontinued, seven schools dropping to D3/NAIA and three closures (one in progress).

I literally forgot about WVU Tech (then again, who hasn't?). Added to my list above.

Wonder how the attendance was in each of these schools

Humboldt had a lot of energy and good crowds. I attended three CWU games there and it was packed.

Just wondering how many new programs have started over the same time period, as well as how many moved up to the D1 level. I know D2 has had a ton of turnover over the same time period, but that has been the history of D2 athletics in general.

I have actually sort of answered my question. Michigan-football.com has records for D2 schools. The following schools are ones I have found added (or restarted ) since the start of the 2000 season.

                              Southern Nazarene
                              Davenport
                              Oklahoma Baptist
                              Lincoln (Pa)
                              St. Augustines
                              Bluefield St.
                              Shaw
                              Ohio Dominican
                              Lake Erie
                              West Florida
                              Shorter
Lincoln (Ca) - save the discussion about this school for another topic, as they aren't really a DII school, but play several D2's during the year.
                              Post
                              UTPB
                              Notre Dame College
                              Charleston
                              UNC - Pembroke
                              Wheeling
                              Franklin Pierce
                              Seton Hill
                              CSU-P
                              Barton
                              Erskine
                              Limestone
Allen - Dropped in mid-2000's, returned in 2018
                              Edward Waters

St. Paul - restarted the program in 2003 before dropping athletics following the 2010-2011 school year and closing 2 years later.

This means, by my count, we have seen 26 (not including Lincoln Ca) schools now competing at the DII level which have added football. Of those, 25 are currently competing. Somehow, D2 football actually has more teams now than they did in 2000, but there has been a huge change in the number of programs over the time period, and the distribution of those programs, with the western states losing programs and the mid-Atlantic and eastern Great Lakes region adding teams.
