  • Announcement Regarding D2Football.com Scores Page

Hi everyone. The announcement below has been posted to the main page but I wanted to share it here as well. As stated in the announcement, this was a very difficult decision to make, but also very necessary. I hope you will understand.

    __________________________________________________ _

To friends, fans and visitors of D2Football.com:

Since 2000, D2football.com has been the go-to resource for news, information, education and discussion on all things involving NCAA Division II football. That mission has not changed and will not change as we move forward. However, many of you know that we have been navigating challenges since owner and founder Brandon Misener suffered a health emergency in May, 2024. While we still have plans for Brandon to rejoin us in some capacity, at present, that is not possible. As we continue to chart our path forward without Brandon’s day-to-day involvement, there is an operational change that I want to open about.

For two decades we have maintained a near-real time scoreboard on the website. Considering our resource constraints and the accessibility of scores through other means, we have decided to retire the process. Beginning this season, we will no longer be updating scores in real time on the scores page. This was a very difficult decision for our team.

Unfortunately, delivering that service has always been a time consuming and laborious task. Updating scores is a completely manual. We would love to have automation to synch to every team’s live stats, but that is not something that can be accomplished within our resources. Managing our scores page involved at least one person (and frequently more) monitoring all active games through live stats, video, and social media posts and manually entering updates as they occur. This process would begin at noon, eastern on Saturdays and continue until midnight. At peak times there could be as many as 60 games active simultaneously.

In the past, Brandon managed the scores page solo on many game days. On others, he was able to lean on dedicated helpers. Facilitating that process has become unsustainable. My priority is attending games in person, but on most game days, as soon as I return to home base, the first thing I do is login to our admin site and update scores. I have been doing that for 15 years and many others on the team have assisted as well. It is a huge commitment, and frankly, for many of us on the team, a distraction as well.

When Brandon’s health forced him to the sideline prior to last season, we lost the person most capable of coordinating efforts to update the scores along with any resources that could be leveraged. We considered discontinuing score updates last summer but we decided to continue because we knew how important it was to Brandon. I’m sad to say, it ended up making last season very difficult for our team and we have decided that we will not put ourselves in that position again. Everyone that contributes to this site is a volunteer. All of us have limited time to put into it. Witt, myself and Brandon have decided that the collective time and energy of our team is best put to use via the columns and podcasts that we produce. As such, we will no longer invest time and effort in updating scores of live action. We will update final scores at the end of every day so the results will still appear on the schedule for each day and for each team.

For real time scores, updates are easy to find on team social media accounts and live stat links, which we do provide on the schedule page. The NCAA also maintains a scoreboard for Division II.

I know this will be very disappointing to many of you and we appreciate that you have trusted us to be the best source for keeping up with scores. This was a very tough decision to make, but it is the right path forward to make the best use of the resources we have.

I have no problem with this. That is an extremely arduous task to expect volunteers to spend their Saturdays (and more) watching the various sources for scoring updates and then manually changing the scores on this site. I agree it is unsustainable in the long-term.

If there are particular games for which I want to know the current live scores, then I am happy to look them up myself.

I understand it was important to Brandon, but I had also just assumed that between campus live stats, and the implementation of new direct-to-NCAA scoring software 5 or 6 years ago, that manually updating nationwide scores had become a little redundant, no offense. Thanks for your efforts.

We know that this whole website is pretty much a labor of love, but the health (both physical and mental) of those of you who do the thankless job of keeping this thing going is most important. And as others have said, if you really want to find the scores it's possible. We are all thankful for all that everyone involved behind the scenes do.

You'd be surprised how many schools don't have live stats running. That was the only reason I could see continuing.

This is totally understandable. And the live stat and video links are still there for us junkies to check in. Thanks for all you guys do!!!

I just want to give my thanks to all of you who maintained the D2 real time scoring updates here for as long as you did. You helped inspire me to do the same for the last decade or so in the indoor & arena football space which I still do to this day on the web & Facebook. And trust me, I wouldn't have even attempted to do real time scoring updates for upwards of 60 simultaneous games. I generally top off at around 12 max. So I have more respect than you know for the sheer work and effort that your team has put in over the years. Anyway, thank you again and I wish your site continued success going forward.

Here's a sense of what it looked like when I was doing it for a few weeks last season.

This is 39 browser windows open, re-sized, and moved around so I could see them all. And the problem was after a certain number of browsers were open, the live stats would stop working for all of the games, so then you had to close some of them until they all started working again. It was a pain in the butt lol.

There was one SID who used to keep an updated list of links to all D2 Live Stats pages. Pretty sure it was one of the MIAA schools in Missouri. One of the old timers here might know. It might not be kept up-to-date any more.

That's both esthetically pleasing, and wild to look at. Very cool.

MSU used to announce conference scores at the end of the third quarter. They haven't done this for several years. I've asked and no one has given a satisfactory answer.

Heck, on the live show and in the conference shows, there was mentions of schools that hadn't even gotten their rosters posted yet at that time. I know with the portal and all guys can move a lot, but they should have that ironed out a week before a game at least.
