1. Findlay - With a dominate 42-30 victory over Wayne State in a game where the Oilers led 42-3 at one point. Yes they did get lazy at the end but this team is very good. Next versus Lake Erie
2. Tiffin - Turnovers cost the Dragons in this one as they really played well against a top 10 Lenoir-Rhyne losing 38-17. Give LR credit as they took advantage of every turnover scoring 28 points off of Tiffin’s 4 giveaways. Athletically I thought they matched up very well and had some moments that had me thinking they are close to being great again this year. Next versus Northwood.
3. Northwood - UPSET! The Axe is painted blue by now as the Wood beat SVSU 10-7 in a defensive battle. An ugly game at times but that’s what Northwood needed. Watched the game and athletically it looked like SVSU should win by 30 but Northwood made it a dog fight and the Cardinals offense didn’t respond. SVSU is a very good team and Northwood under year 2 of the Beurer regime is a prime example of what a coaching change can do. There is new energy at Northwood and it has happened very fast! A huge game at Tiffin this week.
4. Thomas More - Played a bad NAIA team and won 50-0. The Saints have looked very good in their 2nd year in DII. Next versus Ohio Dominican.
5. Ashland - Lost to Ferris St 43-3 and The Bulldogs were nice to the Eagles. Ferris was up 36-3 at halftime and put it in cruise control. The Ashland offense needs to improve dramatically or this could be a very hard year for the Eagles. With the 2nd straight year of starting 0-2 we all know what Ashland is capable of in the GMAC conference so do they go on another run? I don’t think so as this team just doesn’t have any offensive weapons right now. Next game a much needed easier opponent in Hillsdale.
6. Hillsdale - Lost 21-6 to Michigan Tech. Moved the Chargers up to 6th by default as the rest of the teams had rough weekends. This was perhaps the most boring game of the weekend. No enthusiasm by either team as Tech looked like they were going through the motions and were never threatened in this game by Hillsdale. I guess the Chargers played better but FloTV should have paid me to watch it. I would have thought Hillsdale would have come out with a ton of energy as they needed this win or at least be competitive but they looked very flat. Hillsdale I’m looking for a player or coach to play with some enthusiasm and energy, let’s act like we want to be out there. Next up a winnable game versus Ashland.
7. Walsh - Had a bye week. Next versus Kentucky Wesleyan.
8. Ohio Dominican - Lost to Winston-Salem St in overtime 19-13. A tough loss for the Panthers as this is a game they won easily last year. ODU us another team in the GMAC with a struggling offense. With no run game the Panthers threw the ball to keep them in the game and they fought back to send it to OT but couldn’t finish. Next versus Thomas More.
9. Kentucky Wesleyan - lost to William Jewell 23-16. The Panthers gave up 14 fourth quarter points and let this game slip through their fingers. With only 21 yards rushing the Panthers need to find a run game to go along with a decent passing attack. This is a game KW should have won. The GMAC as a whole might be the worse rushing league in the country. Next up Walsh.
10. Lake Erie - YES! The Storm did it in walk off fashion winning 28-27. This was awesome for Lake Erie and they played with the energy needed to pull this out. Post scored taking the lead 27-22 with 38 seconds left in the game. Lake Erie got the ball back with only 2 timeouts left needing a touchdown. The Storm QB Lewis was excellent on this drive and on the final play of the game he found Lee Jr who made an incredible catch in the end zone for a touchdown and the WIN! Great job Storm! Next versus Findlay
