  • Week 5 Rankings

    1. Findlay - Won 28-21 over Hillsdale. This was definitely the hardest the Oilers have had to work all season to get a win. Hoping the win didn’t cost them to much as they lost their starting QB Rueve and RB Farmer. Rueve was getting hit hard most of the game as the Findlay oline struggled to contain the Chargers pass rush. Farmer on the other hand was great and ran physical. Two missed field goals made this come down to the final drive and corner freshman Jacob Harvey saved the day for the Oilers intercepting the ball in the end zone. Findlay won the game but Hillsdale showed they need improvement. Next up Kentucky Wesleyan.
    2. Ashland - Won 21-12 over Tiffin. Coach Geiser and his players answer the critics on Saturday by pulling out a huge win over the Dragons. This game was wild. When they say special teams matter they did in this one. 2 blocked field goals in the 1st half by Ashland kept the momentum going for the Eagles. Tiffin got the memo at halftime though and blocked a punt for a safety. Dragons followed that up with a TD and it was a 2 point game. Eagles QB Bycznski played very well and the long TD pass to Croom locked it up. The Eagles defense played great and held Tiffin in check. Ashland has to feel good about its position as they have 2 quality GMAC wins. Surprise, surprise, Ashland is a title and playoff contender! Next vs Ohio Dominican
    3. Tiffin - Lost 12-21 to Ashland. This result was a shocker to everyone. The Dragons came in playing pretty good football this season and Ashland was struggling. Watching the game Tiffin was losing the whole game but controlled the ball. It was one of them games that possession time didn’t matter as Tiffin was in the red zone 5 times and had the ball for 9 minutes more but couldn’t capitalize with scores. This was a pretty evenly played game and I was surprised Tiffin couldn’t break free on more big plays other than the 30 yard TD by RB Blackman. Time to regroup for a good Thomas More team next week.
    4. Northwood - Won 55-20 over Lake Erie. This game was 7-7 in the 2nd quarter then I blinked and it was 34-7 at halftime. Game over. Everyone got involved for the Wood and QB Barlage played excellent. This is exactly what we needed to see from Northwood as they played a team they should easily beat and they did just that. I like this program as they seem to get the most out of their players and play with passion. They will need it next week as an improving Hillsdale is coming to town.
    5. Thomas More - Won 44-21 over Walsh. Saints QB Vaden had the game of his life and dominated Walsh. He did it in the air to WR Johnson and WR Brown then on the ground rushing for nearly 100 yards himself. Walsh tried to keep pace in this game but the Panthers could not slow Vaden and the Saints offense as they put up over 500 yards. Defense held the Panthers to under 60 yards rushing and has been playing good all season. This is a very good looking team. How good? We will find out this week as they travel to Tiffin.
    6. Ohio Dominican - Won 38-7 over Kentucky Wesleyan. This was a rainy game but QB Gallehue had a really nice day and the Panthers got it going in the 2nd half and put up an easy win. A 14-7 game at halftime ODU came out and put up 21 in the 3rd quarter and the Panther defense locked down KW holding them to less than 70 yards rushing. ODU needs to build off of this offensive performance as they had over 400 yards and more points than they have in a long time. Next up Ashland.
    7. Hillsdale - Lost 21-28 to Findlay. Seriously is Hillsdale the most talented 0-4 team in the country? The coaches in multiple positions seem to struggle judging talent. 3 quarterbacks played, would they have won with #13 playing the whole game as he is obviously the best and was the 3rd QB in the game! Their WR Ruddy is a game changer and was not in for the final drive to win the game? Still only seen 2 average RBs, would like to see another as the 3rd string QB was great why not try the 3rd string RB? Offense played better and moved the ball some in the 2nd half. Defense played very good. Caused some turnovers and the pressure on the QB was incredible. LB Vance is a nightmare out there and there was a big physical safety that has never played before. Defense is getting better every week. I don’t know if injuries or other factors are why certain players are or are not playing but it seems like if Hillsdale figures it out this could be a team, with their schedule, that could win out. Next up Northwood.
    9. Lake Erie - Lost 20-55 to Northwood. The Storm seem to play a good 1st quarter this year but that’s about it. When things go bad for Lake Erie it just seems to open the flood gates. They will need some time to build a new future at Lake Erie and each week they need to find small steps to take. Not sure they took that step this week. Time to move on to Walsh next week.
    10. Kentucky Wesleyan - Lost 7-38 to Ohio Dominican. Wow. I am worried about this program. In a rain soaked game to give up 38 points to a struggling offensive team and letting them throw the ball all over the field is not good. This team has some talent on the roster and should not be ranked in this position. Coaches have to work to save this season or there is going to be some big changes at KWC. Next up Findlay, ouch.

I have been very critical of this Ashland team. So I will say I was pleased to see them step up to the challenge this week. The truth is they will not face another team as good as the 2 they lost to, to start the year. They know what needs to be done. The defense continues to get better, the special teams that were so good last year are finally starting to show up. The offense still has a long way to go. If they can get anything from this wide receivers group they have a chance.

Good win by Ashland. This league is still wide open. Should be fun to watch.

Chargers showing signs of "life." Still, much work to do. Facing Nwood with a merry-go-round of quarterbacks Hillsdale will certainly be once again challenged to get that first W. The Twolves won't make it easy. Ashland woke up, Tiffin went to sleep, and no Dragonbreath to offer excuses.

I knew Ashland was being undervalued. I just don't get starting so slow. I know they are not going to beat Ferris at Ferris, but they should be good enough to beat IUP at home, especially being competitive with them the last few years. Just didn't seem like they were very prepared in the opener. I know its not where you start but where you finish, but they get in a hole and spend the rest of the season digging out.

Yes it would have been great to get that win versus IUP. They can still run the table and make the playoffs but a win against them would have been huge come playoff seeding time. Would have been nice for the conference too. They have a long way to go but I like their chances with the schedule they have left in front of them.

They just have to beat the Oilers. Only real tough game left. Don't know if they can though. The Oilers are seeking revenge after last season's multiple overtime thriller.
