I hope they go winless and this move bankrupts the school.

That game against Montana St might be as bad as Duquesne at TCU a few years ago. It's going to be in the running for the least competitive game of the year. Basically like if Clarion or Edinboro played North Dakota St.

Mercyhurst scheduling Buffalo St instead of playing Edinboro at home does pretty much say they aren't interested in losing to the local D2 schools.

And this is an argument for why schools should not be allowed to move up to D1 without giving at least one year's notice.

The WAC football schools are going through the same thing with Stephen F Austin's move to the Southland on even shorter notice (and, to a lesser extent, Seattle and Grand Canyon moving to the WCC) and that might put the WAC in danger of dissolving..

Also, that October 19 opening was their Gannon game. As of today, Gannon has not yet scheduled a game, so either they're allowed so many games against non-D1 or Gannon is giving them a proverbial middle finger.
I don't think we'll see those two play anytime soon. It would be a bad look for Mercyhurst now to lose to Gannon in anything.

My guess is once Mercyhurst is a couple years removed (with more built up, higher quality rosters) they'll all the sudden want to play Gannon in sports again.

I do suspect IUP and Mercyhurst will continue to play in men's basketball. Joe and Gary are very close friends. Mercyhurst can count the game and IUP can use it as an exhibition (or they can both count it).

It's a great look for a 'D1' school to open the season on the road at a D2 school.

So that's what Division One looks like? Mercyhurst is the classic example of the small fish in the big pond.

Rio Grande was the school of the legendary 1950's hoopster Bevo Francis. I think they were a Chaminade type program

They were getting some good players when they were able to have Joe Walton, John Banaszak, and Dan Radakovich impress dads with their 70s Steelers Super Bowl rings. The current coach (who played on those late 80s Miami teams) is a nice guy but can't seem to convince kids to play at a school where football is clearly #3. I saw Denny Creehan and AB come in and embarrass RMU to start the season - I'd love to see Edinboro do the same this September.

The community college you're referring to is actually a public college affiliated with the Ohio Department of Higher Education (formerly the University System of Ohio), but the four-year Rio Grande University is private. It's a rather strange setup...
