As Nation said, I still get the occasional mailers but the calls have gone away. It's been years. I'm not just talking athletic calls ... I don't get any from the academic side, either.

Believe me, it doesn't break my heart, but it is odd.

I still send Tort and Joe a yearly donation but even they aren't 'asking' for it.

So, it's hard for the school to get donations if they aren't soliciting them.

It's hard for me to fathom these schools don't have a full-time position for an athletic fundraiser.

    I got calls last winter.

The number of them have decreased though.

Now I get emails. Lots and lots of emails and a few mailers.

Don’t get me started. IUP’s compliance officer hasn’t returned my email from May 10 about something I wanted to support for an athletic program not named men’s basketball or football that sure could use the help. Apparently everything else she’s doing is more important. Waiting on the AD for something else since early April. Guess how inclined I’ll be to support IUP for anything going forward since apparently they don’t need it. Just about all of my experience with the administration has been a disaster, and that’s hard to admit as someone who lives here and got my first degree there.

I think part of what's hurt our schools in the past is that we were primarily teachers' colleges until relatively recently, which didn't lead to a lot of high-income alums. Also, people would say why support a state school sinces taxes already do so. There was some truth to that argument when 60-70 percent of the budget was covered by state money — not so much now that the support has dropped below 25 percent at many schools.

The top football programs in the PSAC West all play in dumps.

Of the three, I'd probably say Cal is the nicest stadium (overall). The visiting section at Adamson is terrible and the locker rooms (home and away) are pretty bad. The home side is very nice. Adamson is awful for older visiting fans. It's a very long haul to the visiting side and the restrooms and concessions are in the far corner (on the home side).

Slippery Rock can hold a lot but is just a big, old high school-type stadium. The visiting team gets split in to two locker rooms / closets. Concessions are very limited. Visiting restrooms are new and nice. SRU - without question - has the best tailgate scene in the West.

IUP's Miller Stadium is a dump. It's falling apart by the year. The ugly perimeter chain-link fencing looked terrible when it was brand new. It's really bad now decades later. The home side restrooms were last updated ... never. It's a trip back in time. The press box is well-documented. The tailgate scene is OK but extremely over-priced ($65/spot/game). Most park on campus for free and walk over. On top of it, the stadium is messy. They leave track stuff everywhere, soccer nets, etc.

Moving North, Gannon's kickball/softball/baseball/football stadium is off the rails awful. Parking is a disaster. The visiting bleachers are three rows high (not joking).

I'd grade out Edinboro and Clarion fairly similar (average).

Seton Hill plays at a high school stadium but ironically may have the nicest venue in the West. There's no track so the fans are close. The locker rooms are close to the field. Parking is a nightmare but they only get 150 a game so it doesn't really matter.

So, I guess if a mega donor did emerge ... I'd rather they dump the money in to scholarships. IUP, Cal and SRU have won for a long time with their crappy facilities. They've just never had enough money in the scholarship piggy bank to take the next step. Cal almost did there for a bit, but, well, that's a different story.
Most of our schools have one, maybe two potential mega donors. IUP just cashed in one of theirs. Mega donor by our standards is probably $5 million or more. And most will want to support McPASSHE's Little Lebowski Urban Achievers program and not football. We just don't have that universal school spirit where the average students and alumni care about football.

Edinboro is the latest to upgrade the lipstick on a 60 year old stadium complex. In the last couple years they've redone the locker room, score board, and turf. All look much better. But its like buying nice new shiny rims for your well-kept 1999 Acura Integra. Was once fun and attractive, now just serviceable and low maintenance. Edinboro's home side is pressed concrete that has been patched for decades. I have a feeling that if something catastrophic happens to it, they'll just adjust to the newer, steel structured away side.

    East stadiums aren’t any better.

If any of you join me in Millersville this fall, we’ll be sitting on a metal visiting stand and make sure you wear sun screen or you will be baked on it. All concession and loo’s are on the home side. It’s okay…but it’s no wow factor. Bloomsburg has the view but again other than their fairly new press box and new visitor loo’s it’s again nothing eye popping. Walk On U..same thing.

IUP is at 75 million in endowment.
