  • Virginia State's colors?

For the record I know VSU's colors are "orange and blue". I've just been confused about the blue for years. I'll see the teams wearing one shade of blue while the basketball court, football turf, band uniforms, merchandise, etc will be a different shade.

Officially speaking, is Virginia State's proper color bright royal blue or dark navy blue? Because they've been putting out both for a long time. I just want clarification on the matter lol.

Looks like they indeed have two different blues. Pantone 2728 is their primary blue, which is the brighter royal blue, and Pantone 287 is their secondary blue, which is the one closer to a navy.

Really? Wow. The first time I ever saw a VSU team they were wearing navy blue uniforms while their band, cheerleaders and half their fans were wearing royal blue. Threw me off as teams are usually particular about what shade of a color they wear.

Been having the same issue with Virginia Union too. Over the years I've seen VUU uniforms and fan gear in the entire "dark red" spectrum. Hell, I've even seem VUU shirts that were plain red. I'm WSSU red lol

For hundreds of thousands of years, the official colors were burnt orange and navy blue. There was never any mention of the lighter Royal blue until our current President raised the subject about 5 years ago and claimed that the blues were interchangeable according to the university’s history. Well, that may be true, but we never had any team uniforms or merchandise in our bookstore that had any blue other than navy until he came along. Personally, I think he likes the Royal blue and now it’s quite prevalent in our team uniforms and merchandise in our bookstore, as well as other stores, like Walmart. But, you can call me old school because I won’t and don’t buy it unless it’s Navy Blue! I have a letterman sweater and it’s Navy Blue with a Burnt Orange S.

Just watched the VA State/WSSU on tv. If the current president wants royal blue to be recognized so badly they should've dropped the dime to make sure the team's uniforms matched the turf or flat out forced the athletic teams to conform. Granted I only really follow football and basketball, so I'm not sure if all VSU's teams wear navy blue like the football team does. It's just weird to me to see the inconsistency, because colleges tend to be uniform across the board when it comes to the school/team colors.

The whole thing is stupid. Our band also has new uniforms and they are in the traditional colors of burnt orange and navy blue. I have no idea where our Prez found the color scheme with the Royal blue option, but no one that I know had ever seen it or knew it existed. Even if it did, as you say, for consistency, navy has always been used. But, to get his way, many of our non-revenue women’s and men’s teams have uniforms with royal blue, instead of navy. And, there’s a substantial amount of merchandise in our bookstore and at the local Walmart with Royal blue. This is a controversy that he invented and, as they say, a distraction. Old school Trojans don’t like it and don’t buy it!
