  • OT: Should Mississippi Valley State University move to D2?

I know this should probably be in the SIAC section (geographically speaking), but that place is a ghost town on this board. Thoughts? Opinions?

Heads up, one of the panelists goes on a political rant at the end. If you don't want to hear any of that part, stop watching the video around the 14:00 mark.

They shouldn't be D1 nor should Bethune Cookman. There's a couple of MEAC members who should also consider dropping down to D2.

The revenue the Florida Classic brings in alone keeps Bethune in D1.

Kenpom basketball ratings for the upcoming basketball season released recently. MVSU is rated 364th out of 364 teams. The best time for MVSU to move to D2 was a long time ago, but the second best time would be right now.

As an aside, I appreciate the hosts of the show putting some respect on D2 football in general at around the 8:00 mark. It's really easy to treat D2 as a complete step down and a mark of shame in discussions like these, but there are genuinely competitive and strong programs in D2 that just aren't D1 for their own reasons, and it's very nice to see that recognized.

It's not just HBCUs, there are a lot of D1s who need to go D2. They nailed it by saying MVSU is being irresponsible and that holds true for many D1 fakers.

Obviously because of football the GSC would love to have MVSU.

Very small chance any d1 schools drop to d2. There is a better chance d2 schools jump to d1

The game is literally the only reason they should stay D1. Granted as WSSU v. A&T, VSU v. Norfolk State, and Tuskegee v. Bama State have shown that you can still get a good crowd for FCS v. D2 rivalry games.

Bethune-Cookman has been going through a whirlwind of problems dating back a few years before Covid. Between the $300 million dorm scandal, executive leadership issues and lawsuits, and the Ed Reed drama the school stays in a bad spotlight. The glory days of football are long gone. They've been D1 since 1980 and the basketball team has never made the NCAA tournament, plus they play in a gym with an end stage that would be the pride of any local middle school. Baseball is about the only sport they usually remain competitive in.

They should do the right thing and move down, but unfortunately I think the doors of the school would close before that happens.

In my opinion, yes they should. If any school does not make competitive growth(winning) over a 10 year period should strongly consider such a move down in division. Athletics has an over all affect on the entire institution. From funding to enrollment, to public imagery. My belief is an institution should have the facilities to attract the high caliber athlete. If you build it they will come!! Also, if you can use the money sent to the school for it 's purpose and not be deposited in personal bank accounts a school will succeed!!

I would argue Del State should drop to D2 also.

But if I could wave a magic wand I would have all HBCUs in D1 FCS between the SWAC and MEAC

Hampton and A&T are probably in the right conference but they are just not good enough for it yet.

Love the respect they put on D2 football.
Being a former Delta State player, and on the 2007 team that beat Jackson State, I appreciate the kudos they gave to Delta.

I know it would never happen, but I would love to see DSU and MVSU merge, and compete in an FCS conference. I think merging would benefit both schools.
RESPECT THE STATESMEN, FEAR THE OKRA!
