It’s a sad day in Florence. UNA’s live mascot Leo III has passed away. I know some of you may have seen him and possibly his sister Una during your visits for games in the past. She passed in 2020. Leo III was 21 years old. I still remember Leo II when I was a student there in the early 90s but these twin siblings captured the hearts of many during their reign over campus. They will be greatly missed.

UNA HC Brent Dearmon was on local radio in the Shoals today and made some interesting comments sparked by mention of West Georgia being back on the Lions schedule this fall.

His portion starts at about the 1:22:20 mark.

"And I think there's possibly a courtship happening between one or two more old Gulf South teams." ... "But, I could see a Valdosta State or West Florida or one of those teams getting invited to move up to the FCS level here pretty soon."

I think it’s safe to assume that West Florida is on a D1 (FCS) trajectory. Valdosta St, not so much.

I don't know if it's 100% in-stone-fact, but I talked with a couple of recruits back in early spring who were also being recruited by UWF. They said they were told Argos were going D1 in the next year or two. Again, no idea if that's poo-poo or not. Just what the kids said.

It's a pretty safe assumption that UWF will go FCS within two years and would be welcomed into the ASUN. Alumni at VSU are starting to beat the drum, but probably on a longer term trajectory.

I may be wrong, but it appears as though after constant discussions about moving up and the ASUN, Conference Carolinas is starting to cool it's heels on potential discussions about any future football alliances with any GSC schools.

I’m being told that both UWF and VSU will be joining the ASUN but at different times (unless something changes that causes them to both join together). I think they want to try to get UWG through a bit of the transition then another will join and so on. So, staggering entry for transitioning schools. At that point, Bellarmine and Queens will be through the process.

There have rumors of southeastern schools like Tampa or Lincoln Memorial but I haven't heard anything lately. The ASUN is mainly in need of football schools to bring the AQ back to just being within the conference instead of combined with the WAC in the UAC.
