  • Week 3 Thoughts

It’s too quiet here. More trash talk please.

Ouachita and SAU - exciting back and forth first half, but Tiger defense figured it out and only allowed 3 points in the second half. OB Jones is a good QB, and fun to watch. OBU lit it up passing the ball in the first half and then got the run game going on second. Good to see both working. Offense is better than I expected. Got some weapons at WR.

ASU - Henderson - what the heck, Reddies? Almost lose to Tech?? Looking ahead to Harding or are there real issues.

    Dear Tech coaching staff,

    TAKE THE 3 POINTS.

Harding - blitzed UAM, no surprise there.

OKBU - Didn’t see that coming…wow! Making a case for the best team in Oklahoma.

SE - Humbling. Has to be worst performance in a few years.

SNU over NW is no surprise. I think they are by far the worst team. Big rebuild ahead. Gotta be hard to recruit to Alva.

ECU - Not super impressed. Anemic offense so far.

SWOK - 4 completed passes and an avg of 2 yards per carry is rough. Gotta figure out something on offense. Defense gave them a chance.

Luke, liked the new format. Thanks for continuing to dig into all stats each week and giving us a team by team breakdown/summary. Showdown in Arkadelphia this Saturday for my Bisons. It thought the UAM passing game would have given Harding a tougher challenge than it did. We’ll find out where the secondary is for my Bisons this week against the Reddies.

Not in the business of apologizing for road wins. Give Tech credit, it’s been a struggle to play up there for HSU the last several trips to Russellville. Luke’s column nails it. Reddies controlled the game but had some mistakes at bad times. Easily could have been up 3+ touchdowns if they just finish drives. At one point in the 4th quarter the total yardage in the game was 475-175 and Tech had negative yardage for the second half.

Again, kudos to Tech for hanging around and showing how dangerous it can be to let a team stay within striking distance. HSU definitely has to capitalize when they drive all the way down the field, but this never should have been this close.

We’ll learn a lot about the Reddies this Saturday. They’ve yet to put together a full 60-minute game and they’ll need to in order to beat Harding.

ECU offense is really not great because of the offensive line. We have some good weapons, but we are going to have to get creative on how we get the ball out because drop back pass or running between the tackles is going to be a struggle.

Outside of that, the Tigers have a decent squad. Really love how the defense plays. Kicking game is also lacking. Not really impressed with the punter and kicker. Going to be a long year of grinding out some wins! Go Tigers!

First time I've waded into the waters of looking at a week and trying to evaluate anything. I will share a couple of thoughts, but please don't expect much wisdom.

HSU dominated a game that ended up being close, which tells me the Reddies are very still very good but were likely thinking more about Harding than Tech. So, I will give them some solid marks for surviving a trap game.

HSU and Harding is the game of the year so far. Harding is obviously very good and we will find out if they are great this weekend. The mental lapses the Bisons have had and fumbles have not hurt them in the first three games, but they will likely have to be much more focussed in the Delph. The forecast calls for little rain or wind, which means both of the offenses should be able to move the ball. Still, if I were the Reddies I'd hope that changes, rains move in, and the game is played with a wet ball.

I was at Cliff Harris and was surprised by the speed that SAU has in the backfield. The Muleriders are dangerous team on offense. They also largely bottled up Ouachita's running attack in the first half. The Tigers have talent on D, but there were holes in the middle of the field which meant drag routes were always open. On offense, I would like to see Ouachita throw more on first down, Harmes has the potential to be very good. Ouachita is also very deep. UAM is a trap game for the Tigers, let's see how they respond before we put them at Harding's level who I think right now have the best team in the league.

The Oklahoma teams seem to have taken a step back this year. SNU has the most weapons, but ECU and SEO are not as strong as I thought they might be this season. The teams out west have a lot of rebuilding to do. Someone has to win a game at some point in the far reaches of Oklahoma, but when will that happen?

Still seeing OBU and Harding leaps and bounds ahead in terms of a Football program. I really think at this pace, OBU and Harding will continue. Even after coaching staffs change.

Henderson is a solid #3 and SAU is super close behind at #4. I think Henderson is in trouble though if they don't get the financial problems under control. SAU is continuing to grow and not slow down for any reason.

No idea about UAM or ATU, I'm blown away ATU is 0-3 this year. No idea on any feel from the Oklahoma schools.

Your president, Trey Berry, sure has SAU going in the right direction. I'm deeply impressed with the direction the university is heading.

Thanks! While he has done a ton, it's not just him. It's really been a combined effort. Community has continued to grow and support the Muleriders. Lithium Mining is about to take off and should help some in the area. SAU really gives you a multitude of options. It's overall quiet, but students can be very involved on campus.

New buildings galore, and continue to get built. We just need a new basketball arena now.

I've been impressed each time I've come down for football and basketball games. Congrats on many fronts.

OBU still not winning playoff games? Shame what underachievers they are when it gets time to play for something.

I would allow Harding to talk trash if they gave up a fight more than once ever
