At least for this year the reason they are so bad is roster turnover, I’d say last year as far as talent they were probably 6th (maybe you could argue 5th over Tech) of 7 teams in conf and they had somewhere between 30 and 40 players leave or graduate, and the vast majority were in the 2-deep.

Bigger picture is recruiting and lack of continuity, they went from 4 and 5 wide under coach O to multiple tight end sets under Nystrom and now 3 and 4 wide (with TEs playing Wr due to depth). And not just scheme, culture changes, changes in recruiting philosophy, exc.). Recruiting wise Ferris, Davenport and Sag have all been recruiting better than them and they are getting less and less good players out of Wisc and Chicago.

I’ll add too that especially Ferris being good and out recruiting them has hurt them the most of anybody. Ferris and NMU have very similar academic profiles (degrees/programs offered, the TIP program, exc.) so recruits looking for/fitting that academic profile who they may have had a chance with/gotten in the 2000s and early 2010s are now only considering Ferris.

Ferris has academics for football players? Somehow I overlooked that. ;-)

Really? That's your response? So FSU is a have not? Who has a D1 hockey team? And we're talking about academic success of the football team anyway. I guess FSU really does think their football players are dogs based upon their lack of academic successes. I get that players can't be ivy leaguers, but one would hope that most could graduate.
