Maybe WU already agreed in principle to one of the Texas bowls. Negotiations start before the end of the season sometimes.

Wasn't the tiebreaker that was used in the past a look at who hadn't been in it longer when similar records were in play?
It's also possible that all went out the window when the official MIAA ties were removed.

I think it used to be the top non playoff NSIC team and the top non playoff MIAA team with the official invites. Last I checked the NSIC tie in is still there but they dumped the official MIAA tie in a few years ago and opened it up to anyone for the second invite.
