  • Turnpike Tussle ESU vs. Ichy Bods

With the 120th edition of the Turnpike Tussle fast approaching, let’s take a moment to appreciate just how dominant we’ve been against Washburn over the years. Our rivalry might go back decades, but the numbers don’t lie—Emporia State has been running this show since day one.

Here’s a quick look at our history since 2000 against those Ichabods from Topeka:

    • Current Streak: 3 wins in a row (and counting!)
    • Home Record: 6-2 (They really hate coming to Welch Stadium)
    • Away Record: 5-3 (We handle business, home or away)

We kicked things off in style back in 2000 with a solid 35-21 win, and it’s been mostly smooth sailing since then. Over the last 10 matchups, we’ve owned them with an 8-2 record. And let’s not forget about our largest margin of victory—a massive 55-23 blowout in 2012. That game wasn’t just a win; it was a statement.

Sure, they had a little run between 2002 and 2011 where they managed to string together three wins, but since then? It’s been all Emporia. We’ve got the longest win streak of four games from 2015 to 2018, and we’re currently sitting on a three-game streak that we’re ready to extend this season.

Our boys have outscored Washburn 479 to their 368, averaging just under 30 points per game. That’s nearly a touchdown more per game than them. Whether it’s grinding out a close one, like our 34-31 win in 2018, or blowing the doors off them like we did last year, we’ve proven time and again that when it comes to the Turnpike Tussle, Emporia knows how to get the job done.

So, as we gear up for this year’s clash, let’s bring that same energy and confidence that has made us a force to be reckoned with. Washburn’s coming in hoping to break our streak, but they’re going to find out real quick that hope isn’t enough when you’re up against the Hornets.

We own this rivalry, and it’s time to remind them again. Stingers up, Hornet Nation—let’s make it four in a row!

See you at Welch Stadium, where another victory awaits.

    Emporia for the win!

Triple B put out some really funny stuff. He lived in Florida and hasn't reported on the board since the summer of 2020. Hope it wasn't a covid thing.

One day, we will all log on for the last time. Let’s hope it isn’t all on the same day.

Message boards are a niche media. I don't think anyone in my personal circle are members of any message board. I'm active on two, but frequent many that are less niche genres, like DIY auto repair and camping.

Everyone has moved to FB groups and discords, and reddit threads.

Boards are so easy to navigate. The others are OK foor some things, but kind of based on the "if it's not being said live, there's no need to go back and look for it" principle.

I don't think I have heard a peep from bodland this season. No idea if they did well in the portal, if they have done anything staff wise to address the defense that has been down for a decade, what expectations are, etc?

Whatever else you say about Schurig, he knows how to score points. Last year's bod O was so down that it makes me think the cupboard must have been completely bare.

This is usually a fun rivalry, but the bods looked bad last year. That said, it's a rivalry game, so maybe the bods can make it a game.

It will be interesting to see how the new QB does at ESU. Gleeson was a good all around QB, but more than that, he was creative, and probably the best MIAA qb I can remember at thinking on his feet/improvising.

I do acknowledge that the ESU coach develops QBs and helps adjust the O to the skill of the QB really well. That said, he is bringing in a D1 guy instead of using a guy he has developed, so either the transfer is that good, or the talent in waiting justwasn'tthere. .

All in, I think this is a tune up for ESU.

Agree entirely. On the other platforms if it isn't concurrent, it is hard to follow.

Washburn does not care about having a good football program. When he was hired to early 2010s they did but they don’t care now. It’s Schurig keeping the same coaches and his nepotism son. 2013-14 was last time they were relevant except for one year. Great facilities but have no identity

They haven’t fired an assistant coach ever… how has no coach not performed. Your safeties have always played well? Your tight ends have played well? Your RBs have done well?

That’s unfortunate. I remember when Washburn was a mid tier team and not just a bottom dweller 😏
