Another miss created by the UIL. The logical thing would be to move ALL classifications. As winter sports start scheduling will become a problem. Clearly the UIL has never tried to play football in the Panhandle of Texas in December.

Not to mention if one of the 6A or 5A schools makes a deep run and they host a late round game in January. A few years ago Denton Ryan cried huge tears to the UIL to wait two days to play Tascosa on a Monday when the temp was going to be above 50 then threw a huge fit to have the game at noon instead of 6pm so they could travel back that day (cough cough - the other motive was so Amarillo didnt have a chance to fill the stands for a home field advantage). They compromised and they had the game at 3pm.

Tascosa Played Haltom in Lubbock two years ago in the quarterfinals. Those kids from Ft. Worth wanted nothing to do with the cold and it was above freezing then with a little bit of snow.

Can't remember the year but Pampa played Grapevine at kimbrough stadium in the state semifinals. The grapevine kids were griping to the paper that they shouldnt have to play a game in the arctic circle. :D

I wouldn't worry much about this announcement. Let's see what happens as time draws near.

So the sixman schools from small communities have to be dictated by the biggest cities?

I wish NM had the foresight texas uil has and realize that there is a monumental difference between 1A-3A schools and the biggest classes.

In NM right now Basketball will start jan 4th and run into the first couple weeks in March. Football can begin practices Feb 22nd, with the first games able to be held march 4th with the sixman state championship may 1st.

Basically us small schools are going to have to manage our limited numbers of kids playing in the state tournament in basketball and the first 2 games of the modified football season.
I have fat thumbs sorry for typos!

What is the logic behind moving 5A/6A to later in the season, but not the lower classifications?

It's the UIL, there is no logic.

The reason given was that the larger cities have had a larger concentration of the virus than the smaller towns and rural areas.

Problem with that "logic" (UIL, not you personally) is that Dallas and Houston has several teams in 4A within city limits.

Thats a great point. There are several kids that go right to basketball after football season is over in normal times. That changes things big time if they are being played around the same time.

I'm guessing most of those schools are in areas with higher concentration of covid but ALSO have much higher attendance at games, making them more dangerous as well for the people watching.

Small schools in large cities are still good to go?

So does Corpus for example. Within the city limits or right on the city limits you have 6 schools who are 4A or below. Then you have to take into account Corpus is a major hub and most of the schools in the rural area are 4A and below. Major hub meaning most of the people who live in those surrounding areas come to Corpus for work, healthcare, shopping, etc on a daily basis or at least a time or two a week.

It would have been better to the unconventional here and just flip the sports seasons. I know several kids in our area who were playing summer travel league baseball and softball and they would have been ready to go on the drop of a hat.

The UIL is going to allow 50% capacity which is the state protocol at this time. With the ban on live broadcasts of Friday night regular season games being suspended for this season, this would have helped with the attendance as well.
