    Spoke with one of his QB's from '78 NC team. H3ll of a coach.

    Great guy. Hated anything that came between him and football, except family. His kids loved him.

      What a great coach. Talk about get-er done. My take while he was at ASU: He was absolutely fearless and his teams had to win way more often than not because no one wanted to even think about facing the wrath of coach Hess if they didn't. He and his staff recruited some of the best we have ever had. Four players went to the nfl from the national championship team, it seems like at least 2 others went to the cfl and a lot more highly talented guys that didn't continue playing football were absolutely fantastic players during their time at ASU. He was a founder of the hugely successful Angelo Coaching Clinic which is still one of the largest coaching clinics in the state. He was a tremendous asset to ASU and wlll never be forgotten.
