  • Texas A&M Victoria

It’s official as of Sept 1 with an expanded focus on Ag and Petrochemical. I knew this would happen with John Sharp being a Victoria native and former State Senator giving himself a a parting gift on his way out of the chancellor’s office. Ironically the new Chancellor Glenn Haggard who left the Comptroller’s office to take the job is from Victoria and served in state Senate as well.

TAMUK is about to get ignored by the system a little bit more I’m afraid.

The University of Houston system has a campus in Victoria, Texas, and a bill was recently passed by the Texas legislature transferring the campus from UH to the Texas A&M system effective 9/1. Kingsville already has to compete for attention with TAMU-Corpus Christi, and Victoria is under 2 hours away from both of those cities, so adding another campus in that area means the attention to that region and the campuses there will be further diluted.

It never made sense to me that the UH system had their campus in Victoria, but it makes even less sense that UH-Downtown and UH-Clear Lake are separate campuses and independent of the UH main campus in the Third Ward (southeast Houston) - especially when UH-D and UH-CL are both within Houston city limits (though the Clear Lake campus is partially in the city of Pasadena).

NAIA. Their athletic department is still relatively new, and they only sponsor 6 sports across both genders

It's Friday, give 'em a break. I'm not a WT alum, but day drinking sounds kinda good.

We should swap Wendler for the Tarleton President - or even a mannequin.

A few have touched on some key points. Ahtletics wise at least in the short term it won’t have a big impact. They are NAIA and do not sponsor football. But what it will do is further drain resources from other schools when it comes to capital improvements or academic programs. We who are not Tarleton State have seen that school getting a lot of attention over the last few years and we can’t even get the Aggie BOR give other campuses the time of day. They’ve put a lot of focus on other new campuses like their extension campus in McAllen, the now four year campus in San Antonio and and their project in Ft Worth currently in progress to compliment their law school.

Some of the WTAM peeps have touched on weak leadership as being part of it up there and I hate to say it as I think the same is the case in Kingsville. It’s not new. We had a strong voice about 10 years ago who retired and then the BOR/Sharp appointed a vegetable to take over. Then some of us had hope when the current President was appointed because he’s an Alum and had a similar position in San Antonio in the Community college district. But so far there hasn’t been the big push to get the BOR to pay attention to things down here although he’s been an improvement over the previous occupant with local initiatives. Sharp and the BOR are appointing their guys/gals to schools who rock the boat that much. It didn’t help TAMUKs cause thought when our local State Rep called Sharp a liar and disgrace to the so called Aggie Honor Code when Sharp was proposing the merger with A&M Corpus Christi. That probably has ALOT to do with it. Now that Sharp has retired, hopefully the new Chancellor will have a different outlook along with some of the newer BOR members who will be coming in. I am not holding by breath though.

Crazy. I don’t think they are getting that many at Texas State or UTSA.

Is this from the same poster who declared Tarleton's athletic budget is $30+ million a year and can't provide a link?

In 2004, there were 3,000 in the freshman class at Tarleton. Tarleton's acceptance rate is 94%.

Record Enrollment Announced as Tarleton State Celebrates 125 Years | The President

That means that there were approximately 3,180 applicants. 21,000 applicants this year would represent at 660 percent increase in one year.

                              Sorry, I don't buy that.

It is incredible that people can post even the most ridiculous claims on the internet, and others just take it as fact.
