I'm not certain it's as big of a deal in D2, but on the D1 level, coaches can oftentimes feel very uneasy if they were not hired by the AD. In this case, if the new AD isn't in place, that might make some candidates unsure of the future. Maybe that's not as big of a deal in D2?
IMO they should tap Coach Sawyer and ask him to head up the search..since he’s got ongoing interest in seeing the program thrive. Just my take.

Coach Curtin was a DC for years and played for Coach Sawyer..and is from my neck of the woods in the south Chicago burbs. We even have some mutual friends from back in the day and such.
I realize the players wanted him to get the gig, but that typically doesn’t move the needle with the AD and such. Simply put, Coach Curtin is the closest thing around to Winona having Coach Sawyer back in the chair. They were together for so long and he certainly knows the Warrior way. I think his loyalty to Winona will lower their portal rate during this time and give them someone they can trust want be a job jumper either.
Best of luck to Coach Curtin in this voyage.
