  • Week 9 Chat

A full schedule is back for the NSIC. Here's the slate:
    • Mary at Minnesota Duluth
    • Jamestown at Bemidji State
    • Sioux Falls at Minot State
    • Augustana at Southwest Minnesota State
    • Minnesota State-Mankato at Wayne State
    • Concordia-St. Paul at Winona State
    • Minnesota State-Moorhead at Northern State
All things considered, I think the MSUM Vs. NSU night game is the biggest of the weekend. I think the Dragons can win, but it will likely be quite the battle. One thing I'm intrigued by is the quarterback strategy for the Wolves. It was mentioned in the NSIC Weekly show that NSU utilizes a two-quarterback system of attack.

From looking at stats, and correct me if I'm wrong Wolves fans, but I take it that is the combo of Daniel Brit and Brock Bagozzi? Clearly it's been effective considering the Wolves are winning right now, I take it there's a mix of one mainly on the ground while the other passes.

From watching college football, only two systems like that come to mind at least in the last couple decades. One is the 2006 Florida team, where Chris Leak tossed for 2,942 yards and 23 TDs, while Tim Tebow rushed for 469 yards and 8 TDs (he also threw for 358 yards and 5 TDs).

The other is Northwestern from 2012-2013 when there was a mix of Trevor Siemian and Kain Colter.
    • Siemian's 2012 stats: 1,312 passing yards, 6 TDs, 48 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD
    • Colter's 2012 stats: 872 passing yards, 8 TDs, 894 rushing yards, 12 rushing TDs
    • Siemian's 2013 stats: 2,149 passing yards, 11 TDs, 33 rushing yards, 0 rushing TDs
    • Colter's 2013 stats: 583 passing yards, 4 TDs, 489 rushing yards, 5 rushing TDs
Not sure if there are more D2 examples. I know MSUM alternated a few times in the 2010s. Demetrius Carr shared time with Jake Hodge, while Jakup Sinani did the same with Bryce Meehl. However, for the Dragons, that more came down to what quarterback had the hot hand, rather than a mix of passing and rushing attacks.

Yes, Moorhead at Northern is the GOTW. What is the weather forecast for Saturday night in Aberdeen? Not just temperature but wind?

Oh boy, a chance to give the Vikings their first loss!

We need good vibes, so let's throw it back to the only win in the series for the Mustangs since the 1990 and 1991 teams....

The Dudes Questions of the Week! Don't say a peep while I'm doing business here, man!

Mary at Minnesota Duluth - Poor, poor, Mary. Do the Bulldogs and Walljasper bounce back with a beatdown or do they simply coast? What is the Health of UMD? Pretty crickets up North.....

Jamestown at Bemidji State - BSU seems to have righted the ship and gotten back on track....... With underclassmen at that...... How cold is the Lake at this time of the year? I see the Beavers taking another plunge.

Sioux Falls at Minot State - Can USF stop the triple option? Last year they did not....... New QB for the Coo looked pretty good in his first look at major minutes. Can Tate keep it rolling?

Augustana at Southwest Minnesota State - Augustana has found something in.......... every QB they seem to recruit and play..... Who is their 26 QB commit? He may either be a stud or find another school...... Vikings my a mile and half! Will SMSU have more drunk tailgaters outside the gates or actual fans inside the gates?

Minnesota State-Mankato at Wayne State - Some are calling for a trap game. Others are saying the Cats have the Mavs number. Not sure either are true. Waynes D has some impressive stats.... Dont read that twice! Who is the next Mankato WR to have a huge game?

Concordia-St. Paul at Winona State - How far is this trip? Is this not the most beautiful drive from CSP to Winona? Warriors are impressing the masses as expectations were low. I cant wait to see them live.

Minnesota State-Moorhead at Northern State - I would call this the GOTW, except...... It is at The Bank and at Night! Is this not when Wolves hunt? If the Wolves D is as banged up at the NSU faithful have eluded to, it could get interesting as Strand is a monster. NSU, please don't trip up before you get to play AU......

Ya, well, you know, that's just, like your opinion, man!

No plunges this week in Bemidji as that is only a homecoming victory tradition.

Maybe the Band? Someone should end up in the Lake after EVERY victory!

Well dang - that's huge for them. Especially considering they only have three conference wins this year.

                      Good for them!

The strategy all season has been alternating every 2 series, with a few exceptions. Britt didn't play against Bemidji due to an injury. At times our OC will go with the hot hand, but that has not been often. The 2H against Wayne was one where he stuck with Bagozzi and then down the stretch against UMD Britt was killing them in the QB run game so he stayed in.

You'll see that Britt is a less-than 6' run-first QB. Can throw it as well, but certainly his athleticism is his strength. Bagozzi is a 6'3" more proto-typical throwing QB. He can move a little bit, but certainly looking to get the ball down field and in the RB hands to run the ball when he's in. It's certainly been working and I've really been impressed with OC having almost 2 game plans every week, which most definitely has to be a challenge for the defense to prepare for each style.

As far as 2-QB systems, that is something Mankato has done for years. They've had many successful combos over the years. NSU has been doing it more often over the last handful of years, but usually it has been because the saying of "if you have 2 QBs, you don't have 1"; however, this year I truly believe either of them could be successful and be THE guy, but its a 2-QB system to take advantage of each other's strengths and for the betterment of the offense. Looking forward to a beautiful October evening under the lights at the Bank!

Note on BSU's win over UMD -

The Beaver's last three wins over the Bulldogs are as follows:

                          9/30/1998
                          9/21/1984
                          9/30/1978

They've played each other every year since 1972 (sans 2020).

That's domination! Definitely a big win for the athletes and coaches.
