Doesn't make sense to me how we're gifted a guy like Underwood and then suddenly can't score a touchdown. We're way past blaming the transfer portal.
Not saying our coaching staff should be free from criticism but I don't think a new HC will fix anything.
I have not been as close to the situation since about 2019, so I don't exactly know what's going on. However, I do agree with the premise that there are institutional factors at play and I don't believe a new coach would necessarily make things any better.
I do think the current athletics administration is doing about as good as possible in the present situation. We are used to working from a deficit at SMSU, it's just frustrating that we are somewhat doing it to ourselves as well.
I'm not trying to be a pessimist and put my own team down - but the harsh reality is that we're closing in on 2018 Crookston levels of awful.
Really hard to find moral victories when we're averaging 1.5 points a game against the conference.
Not sure what needs to happen but... yeah.
I disagree with this premise. We are still not at 2018 Crookston levels. But I guess the proof will be in the pudding as we play out the rest of the season, as the schedule won't do us any favors.

I'm not very close either - it's just a gut feeling. I think Underwood is doing the best he can with what he was given.
And it's probably true that it's not just one or two things. I'm preaching to the choir but we definitely need more money pumped into facilities - obviously a lot easier said than done.

Honestly, seeing what Whipple has done through the department so far with those limited resources, I'm hopeful. I think we are making slow strides forward. I don't know if we'll ever see results fully realized in football though just because of the level you need to get to, but I think other programs will benefit.

I mean - maybe it was a little bit dramatic, but they lost by an average of 33.32 points/game, SMSU is at 32.5 against the conference. But you're right, with only two conference games so far this year it's way too early to call.
It seems like we have a better defense than they do, but they had a better offense. It's really a moot point I guess.
At this point the only question is does the new presient think football matters and will he put the money togethert to fully fund scholarships?
that's the only question that needs to be asked and answered.
He came from Mankato so I am hopeful.
If he doesn't put the money to 36 scholarships, no other question matters because we can't be competitive. almost every other school is now fully funded so we need to be too.
Look at mens BB womens BB and volleyball. we are fully funded. we win. in football we are either last or 2nd to last in scholarships. it shows up in the standings.
then you add bad locker rooms and not travel and recruiting budget, wham wham wham
What bothers me is we have more resources and a better facility than UMC did, and we can't score in garbage time against third stringers.
We have a better facility.....but I'm starting to question the resources. The locker rooms were below standard when I was in college 15 years ago....and I doubt they have improved much. If MrMustang is right about scholarships (and no reason to doubt him), we are way behind the curve.

They got a spit shine once or twice - but it's still really bad. It needs a full renovation.
I probably sound like a broken record but campus was really neglected through the Gores years and now we're spending boatloads to fix it - I'm far from a college finance expert but I'm guessing there just isn't enough to do it all at once.
It was actually so bad that one of the groups in my major was docked points because they filmed a commercial using one of the classrooms - and the professor said "We want to encourage people to come here - showing them the inside of this place will scare them off." SMH
I feel for you guys. It should not be this bad. I watched some of the game, a tough watch. Missing some talent, need to recruit better and try the portal for next year.
